The 2023 team was overrated. What that team truly was can be personified in what should have been their statement game before all the injuries could be an excuse, When they went up to Orchard Park in week 4, a week after the 70 point game against Denver, and got their doors blown off. The injury excuse and cold weather BS didn't hold any water. They were just a slightly above average team that could beat up on bad teams but could not compete against the better teams in the league.
I don't think it was over rated at all, it was one of the best teams in the league until injuries became too much to overcome. The Buffalo game, I'm sure Eichenberg came in for Williams to play center and got absolutely destroyed on nearly every play by Daquan Jones, he was walking him 8 yards in to the backfield. I can still remember the image of Eichenberg basically doing the splits at one point trying to block him. Then on the other side they had to play Kohou on the outside (as Ramsay was still injured) who Diggs absolutely abused and Fangio wouldn't change anything to try and stop it.
Again, it's not an "injury excuse" when you have 9 starters missing games. Teams can overcome a few starters missing but when you have 40% of your anticipated starting roster out injured you aren't going to win many games. They played nearly half a season with the 3 interior OL missing, Wynn missed 11 games, Williams 9 and questionable for 2 others and Hunt missed 6 games while being questionable for another. Cotton, Jones and Eichenberg played over 1500 snaps between them when one of them was meant to be 9th on the depth chart.
For the final 2 games of the regular season the offense was missing 5 starters for Baltimore and 4 for Buffalo (with Hunt coming back from a 4 game absence and Tyreek in a walking boot that week). That's half your starting offense missing or playing through massive injuries.
I can't even be bothered starting on the defense by the end of the season they were signing guys off of their couches to play it was that bad.
I know people will point out the Buffalo, KC and Eagles games which all came before the injuries reached crisis point but Buffalo was the only game they got beat down, the Eagles was closer than the scoreline and still one of the worse officiated games in my recent memory and KC they really should have won if not for Tyreek's fumble (should have been blown dead) or Tua missing Wilson being open.
It's easy to hate everything about this franchise right now but that 2023 team, if healthy would have had a chance. I've no doubts at all they win the division with even a little bit more injury luck and you never know from there.
