There is a good chance Miami signs a player (or few) after May 12th (tomorrow) since signings will no longer count against our compensatory picks.

Here are 3 guys I would like to see join the Dolphins after May 12th and who I would be willing to part with to make the room on the roster.

Post May 12th signings

1. Arian Foster, RB - After drafting Tunsil, the running back position replaced offensive line as one of our biggest question mark positions. We have two young RBs that we don't really know what we have in yet. There is plenty of reasons to think Ajayi and Drake will be good in Gase's offense, but if Foster checks out medically, he walks on as the best RB in Gase's system in 2016. Foster gives Gase yet another dangerous weapon to add to his arsenal. Not only is our RB depth questionable (Daniel friggen Thomas is on the roster!), but currently there is no veteran presence at the position. To me, this is a little scary. Some scouts consider Kenyan Drake to be arrogant which should be a concern for us. Here is a guy [Drake] who walks into the locker room as as a 3rd round selection coming off a National Championship where he scored the game sealing TD.. Plenty of reasons to feed that ego. I think signing Foster makes it a little harder for Drake to be the alpha of the RBs his rookie season. Also, using Foster, Drake, and Ajayi as a committee would be wise due to all of their injury concerns. Splitting up the work will be conducive to keeping them in good condition. Arian Foster isn't going to make or break our running game, but he certainly brings more to the team on and off the field than Isaiah Pead, Daniel Thomas, and Damien Williams.

sign: Arian Foster
cut: Isaiah Pead, Daniel Thomas

2. Leon Hall, CB - I mentioned running back being ONE of our biggest question mark positions. Corner would be another. Hall is coming off a great season under our new Defensive Coordinator, Vance Joseph. If there is anyone that knows this guy inside and out, its Joseph. There is a reason why PacMan Jones, Leon Hall, and even Vontaze Burfict were linked to Miami early in Free Agency.. I don't think there is any question that Joseph loves his Cincy defenders. With some questionable tackling skills among Maxwell and Howard, Leon Hall would bring a strong tackler to the defensive backfield. He recorded the 6th most on the defense and trailing only to PacMan at CB. After seeing Jamar Taylor shipped out of town for a pack of bubble gum, I also wonder how 5'9" zone corner Bobby McCain fits in on Gase's Miami Dolphins... If given the choice between Leon Hall and Bobby McCain, I know who Vance Joseph would select.

sign: Leon Hall
cut: Bobby McCain

3. Jason Jones, DE - Jason Jones has visited Miami twice already and much like the other two names I mentioned, we haven't heard a peep out of his camp lately. Jones is a guy who the Dolphins have obvious interest in, and rightfully so. He is a very reliable rotational DE that Lions fans would have liked to retain. Like Andre Branch, Jones is solid against the run, which is the primary area of improvement needed in 2016. For a team riddled with injury concerns, Jason Jones would not be one of them. He has played in 31 of 32 games his last two seasons. At 29 years old, he would a solid addition and great replacement for newly departed Damontre Moore (the moron that famously asked Ryan Tannehill in the locker room if he is lucky to be in the presence of such a physical specimen). In the event Dion Jordan returns with a chip on his shoulder, I would willingly give Dion Chris McCain's roster spot with the additon of Jones, keeping the following 6 DEs: Mario Williams, Cameron Wake, Andre Branch, Jason Jones, Dion Jordan, Terrance Fede.

sign: Jason Jones
cut: Damontre Moore (done), Chris McCain (if Dion is ready to rock & roll)

Hall has not visited and has been on two other team visits so far... I get the connection with Joseph but still I am not so sure how interested we really are? We should be interested but also doubt they cut McCain already not that we need to even if we were to sign Hall.

Also wondering if the possible return of Jordan and make nice move with Wake removes Jones from consideration (Again it should not but maybe it does in FO's mind).

We need another RB on the roster IMO so Foster or whoever after cuts etc..

Why are you cutting Bobby McCain for an aging vet who has not played a full season since 2010?

FWIW,

Hard pass on foster. 0 interest.

Would love Hall. Wouldnt mind Jones

I don't mind the other moves, but I don't cut Bobby McCain. I'm not sure Joseph's preference for bigger corners applies to the slot corner position. The skill set for covering slot receivers is different...relying on quickness more than anything. Even when McCain got beat last year, he showed some tenacity. Those are the exact types of players we're trying to keep on the team.

You want a roster spot for Hall? Cut Walt Aikens.

Bobby McCain is a pick from the old regime. You see what they did with Jamar Taylor.. Like I said, I am not sure how Bobby McCain fits what they are trying to do on defense.

Leon Hall is a guy coming off one of his best years under our defensive coordinator. He knows the system, excelled in the system.
You're right, conventional wisdom would say don't replace a young developing player with a 31 year old db.. He is an aging vet, but one with familiarity in Joseph's D that could help bring Howard and Maxwell along.

That would work, too. I don't have anything against Bobby McCain at all, it would just make sense if Joseph wanted to bring in a familiar face on defense.

Here is a guy he knows well, coming off a good season in his defense, and still available in May (not counting against compensatory picks). I don't think Miami is going to be afraid to move on from a young guy if they want to go in a different direction. We saw that in the draft with Jamar Taylor.

You're right though, Walt Aikens would probably be the better cut. Especially when you have two guys in Michael Thomas and Jordan Lucas who can play both S and CB.

I doubt Miami will sign all three. Who is your priority.

1- Hall
2- Jones
3- Foster

Hall or a CB followed by Jones?

bingo

You don't cut Walt Aikens either. He may not be a good safety right now but he was a great special teams player last year. If he doesn't show improvements this year then you can consider cutting him.

Right now Joseph likes what he sees from Aikens.

Joseph, who was previously Cincinnati’s defensive backs coach, likes Miami’s depth at safety. He believes he has athletic players who can make plays on the ball.

Assuming Abdul-Quddus starts, Michael Thomas and Walt Aikens — who are both key special teams players — are the top two reserves.

Thomas and Aikens alternated as starters last year after Louis Delmas tore his ACL in training camp.

“Walt Aikens, he has corner movement,” Joseph said. “He’s going to be a guy who’s going to grow into a pretty good free safety or strong safety. Obviously, Reshad is a great player. Mike Thomas is very, very efficient — a very solid, smart player. Isa, he can really run — he’s a low 4.4 guy. We’ve got four guys who are very capable.”

The Dolphins see Aikens as a safety, you are not cutting a safety to make room for a cornerback...atleast you shouldn't.

I get you're thinking here, but the team would be wise to not count on Dion Jordan. Expect nothing and anything you get out of him would be a bonus. If he shows up ready to go and reinstated, I give him a roster spot.

In fact, I would take the same approach with Arian Foster as our third running back. Low expectations. Signing Foster would be contingent on a 1 year flier deal. If he stays healthy the whole year, I dont think there is any question that he will bring more on and off the field than any other RB we can put in that 3rd spot.

Like I said in the OP, Daniel friggen Thomas is our third RB right now  I don't know how anyone could complain about a Foster signing when he'd essentially be replacing Daniel Thomas.

Very tough to sign all three of these guys, unless they all are reasonable (Very doubtful...especially Leon Hall). Even though way to short for our coaches taste, I doubt very much they will be letting go of Bobby McCain this early in his career, the kid is a play maker, has a very good nose for the ball.
