Good showing for the most part by the Phins... first thumbs up for:

1) Vontae Davis - After the tough showing last week, he really responded and shut down whoever he was covering. He only gave up one completion and was immediately on the WR making the tackle when it happened for about 8 yards. He played aggressive on run plays and blanketed WRs. Great showing.

2) Offensive Line - Have to put them in as a group because they all played great. An offensive line fails when 1 member misses a block and an entire play can be blown up, so it takes a full 5 guy effort to really make plays work, and they did it well last night. Donald Thomas in the starting lineup really makes a difference and the line is gelling nicely. They allowed minimal pressure on passing plays and opened up some nice holes all the way through to the 3rd quarter.

3) Lex Hilliard - Stood out with explosion and power, also caught the ball well out of the backfield. Honestly all of our running backs looked good today in part because of our offensive line, but Lex stood out above the rest. Im sure for his early runs having our 1st team Oline against their 2nd/3rd teamers helped, but you can see the talent this kid has. Can we fit him on the active roster, or will we have to try to sneak him on the PS again, another tough call for the FO.

Now 3 downs

1) Chris Williams - Poor kid, just can not seem to catch the ball cleanly on kickoffs or punts. Then hes wearing one of those newer helmets where the face mask sticks out more and gets a doinker right off of it. He seems to be too nervous/anxious and its causing him to bobble anything he catches. Add the fact that he plays no wide receiver for us even as the games are winding down and it looks like hes a goner. Hopefully he can be PS material because he is explosive and would be a nice return specialist if he could get a grip on the most important part of being a return man, securing the football.

2) Safety Coverage - Throughout the game the TEs of Carolina were left to roam in the middle of the field, most of the time it appeared it was the Safety's responsibilities and they were late often. Their top 4 TEs numbers were 7 catches for 109 yards, not very good. Tony G week 1 will be a killer if we cant start to close down the middle of the field.

3) Outside/Downfield Passing Game - Take away receptions to our running backs, and we had under 70 yards passing this game, and many of those seemed to be WR screens or quick passes. Our oline appeared to give time to the QBs to be able to go downfield but not many chances were taken. Henne tried one down to Wilford but it appeared Wilford got a little tied up and couldn't get under the pass. Do not know who to lay the blame on here, but we have to keep our WRs involved in our offense, especially when the running game is working and we have those opportunities.

All in all a good game for the Phins, and am always glad to see us keep winning. What did you guys think?

IMO, the problem with the WR's not catching many balls is just that....they are wide. Unless they run routes taking them inside the hashmarks, Penny isn't going to throw their way. As much as I love Penny and I do believe he is still our best QB, he effectively is only playing with 2/3 of a football field.

Really spot on with your analysis.

When I thought of 3 thumbs up guys . . . I thought Vontae Davis, Donald Thomas and Lex Hillard. I also like how Pennington ran the offense while he was in there.

Thumbs down I kept thinking about Chris Williams and the whole special teams coverage team, the TE's being open (safety coverage) and the deep ball, which outside of the wildcat throw to Cobbs, we were really blah . . . but then again this is preseason, and we should see more in the next game.

yea i am getting tired of us getting torn up by opposing TEs thats always been a weakness in the past years we need a cover safety. wilson and bell are more run support safeties. Chris Clemons can cover i hope he sees the field some

This might be crazy thought, but do you think that coaching staff designed plays for he RB to catch passes in order to see how they do. Instead of focusing on the WR. Just a thought.

^could have... but it did appear there were times when the QB was looking down the field and checked down to a RB...

but this staff definitely puts the focus on different positions/players at times, even in the regular season last year it seemed they'd do that... one week Camarillo was the go to guy, another week Ginn, then Bess, then the TE's, then RBs, etc...

this is the year ginn will breakout im confident in this and also bess is very reliable, i wouldn't worry at all these guys barely played, hartline im not too sure about but apparently hes now the #3 wideout so hes doing well.

This is what I loved best about our offense last season, This is why I dont think we need a true #1 receiver right now. Our system is all about spreading the ball around and getting it to the guy the defense least expects to get it.

yeah he did well, just not enough to be above these guys... also i cant believe they didn't credit him with a Sack on that one play... McCown threw it while he was basically on the ground already and they ruled it incomplete... thats the 2nd missed sack in the stat column from a late *** throw by the QB with Wake draped all over them...

better get tht fixed before week 1 or tony g will eat us alive

I heard Matt Ryan isnt utilizing him like he should be. Dont know if its true or not but apparently Ryan isnt looking his way as much as the coaching staff wants him to

Or unless they stay w/in 5-10 yards of the LOS like Bess, where he makes 95 percent of his catches.

His knee was on the ground, replays showed.

But it was then 4th down so didn't change much. Still should have been credited w. a sack, imo.
