2004 Draft, going in I was really hoping to get Shawn Andrews but alas he was scooped up 3 spots ahead of us when the Eagles traded up to get him...So Miami gets on the clock, and takes the next best thing Vernon Carey...

Andrews was named a pro bowl starter this year at RG, and most around here would argue that Carey should have been in the pro bowl at RT..They are both outstanding players, but at this point in their careers who is the better player?

Real tough to say at this point. I think this year will show who is better. Andrews seems to be a little bit better but plays a less important position. Plus Carey is pretty versatile. I think I would still take Andrews at this point, but not by much.

I like Carey and all but Andrews has the more potential...i think Alabi, Toledo or some other player we could pick up could play RT for us..but since Saban is gone i wonder if we would give Carey another shot at LT and if we do and he proves to be good then it obviously would be him

Let it be known that I am not one of those who thinks that Carey should have gone to the ProBowl...

This thread makes a little no sense to me because I think it's obvious Andrews is the better player and it's not like Miami passed on him to take Carey -- Like you said, Andrews wasn't there and Miami settled on Carey...

Tough to say. I'd give the slight nod to Carey since he's still playing RT and not inside at Guard. He's also not had to battle serious weight issues, I remember an ESPN story about Andrews being 370 lbs coming into camp this season. Carey also doesn't have the added benefit of playing next to Jon Runyan and simply put, didn't make the Pro Bowl because Willie Anderson is still playing. So as for now, I'll give it to Carey even though he doesn't have Pro Bowl status, though the AFC's got a lot of mainstays on their Pro Bowl line in Will Sheilds and Willie Anderson manning that right side.

Carey would be a MONSTER at RG. Look at it that way.
This is what Im getting at. They are both very good players, but play different positions at this stage.

I would rather have Andrews. He has been a better player thus far but Carey has gotten alot better since Houck's arrival and Wanny's departure.

Well I could've guessed that seeing as how Carey plays for the Dolphins, of course you don't think he's any good.

Carey is turning out to be a very good right tackle and I am more than happy that we have him here. Like some other posters said, it wasn't even possible for us to take Andrews.

My point isnt should we have taken Andrews, its that Carey has turned himself into a much better player than most of us expected at that time...If the same poll had been taken the day after the draft, or even after the first year, it wouldnt even be close IMO...
It is just further proof that you have to give a player some time to develop in this league...
And it could be argued that Carey is just as good if not better than Andrews, so maybe we were lucky to not have had the opportunity to draft Andrews....

What are we supposed to base this analysis on? Am I to believe that everyone here is watching the Philadelphia Eagles offensive linemen?

Does anyone have like stats on the kind of season carey had so i can prove to someone he had a great season. i have a friend whos a bucs fan and he told me that their o line has better tackles then ours and I explained that even with the weakness of our LT we still have a better o line then they do. Then when i said Carey had a great season he said he is one of the bottom 10 starters at RT in the league, of course knowing my buddie he basing his info off madden ratings which does Carey no justice. I just want to show him some stats to prove to him hes an idiot lol so if someone can help me out.

Andrews is a heck of a RG but Carey's not so bad himself. Carey's had the unfortunate situation of being with this horrible OL. If he were on say, KC's OL, he'd be Pro Bowl bound. Andrews was gone before we could draft there anyways. And keep in mind, Tackles are almost always more valuable than guards. And if Houck decides to retry Carey at LT and Carey's able to be equally successful, he will be more valuable than Andrews.

These two players are the best example for grading after the first season. While Carey embarrassingly rode the bench his first year, Shawn Andrews only played one game (injured for the rest of it).

Even after their second years, Andrews' negative plays (penalties and sacks) more than doubled that of Carey's, 14 to 6. Still, I have no idea who's playing better. I have to rely on the limited statistics and what other, more informed people are telling me. But these two players aren't getting that kind of recognition.
