Make of this what you will. I went through all of our 3rd and 4th down conversion attempts on offense, pulled them off the list and made a separate chart.

I also included attempts that were called back by penalty or awarded by penalty.

In bold are the attempts that were successful.

At the end of the table I have a small analysis.

In the Jets game there were 16 attempts on 3rd and 4th down.

- Of those 16, 14 were on 3rd down and 2 were 4th down.

- We attempted a passing play on all 16 attempts, Zero rushing attempts.

- 7 of those attempts were of 5 yards or less.

- On 3rd downs we went 3/14, one was a pass for a TD.

- On 4th downs we went 1/2

- On one attempt Penny was sacked, and on another he had a scramble (which would have been enough for the first down) called back because of a hold.

- One pass was intercepted on 3rd down to end the game.

In the Cardinals game we had 15 attempts on 3rd and 4th down.

- 4 out of 9 were pass attempts.

- 5 out of 9 were rushing attempts.

- 6 of the 9 attempts we faced 5 yards or under.

- We converted 4 out of 9 attempts.

- Of those 4 conversions, 2 were for Touchdowns, 1 rushing, 1 passing.

- Zero attempts were made via penalty nor taken away due to penalty.

In the San Diego game we had 16 attempts on 3rd and 4th down.

- 15 of those attempts were on 3rd down.

- 1 attempt was 4th down.

- We had 9 passing attempts and 6 rushing attempts.

- 11 of 15 we faced 5 yards or less.

- We were 7/15 on Third down, 1/1 on 4th down.

- One first down was awarded on an incomplete pass due to a PI call.

And finally we have the Houston game, we had 10 3rd down attempts in this game.

- All 10 attempts were 3rd down.

- 9 attempts were pass plays, 1 was a run.

- 6 of the 10 we faced 3rd and 5 yards or less.

- We converted 2/10 attempts.

- Zero conversions were awarded or nullified by penalty.

- One pass was intercepted on 3rd down.

On the Season we have faced 66 third and 4th down situations.

- 61 3rd down attempts.

- 5 4th down attempts.

- We are 4 out of 5 on converting 4th downs.

- We are 19 out of 61 on 3rd down conversions. (The 2 attempt discrepency is due to my inclusion of penalty downs.)

- 41 attempts were of 5 yards or less, leaving us 20 attempts with long situations.

- 4 out of 5 4th down attempts were 5 yards or less.

- Leaving 37 3rd down attempts at 5 yards or less.

- 50 attempts were pass plays. (Total 3rd and 4th down)

- 16 Attempts were Rushes. (Total 3rd and 4th down.)

- We have converted 10 out of 16 rush attempts (3rd and 4th down, two for Touchdowns)

- We have converted 13 out of 50 pass attempts (3rd and 4th down, two for Touchdowns)

- 2 passes were intercepted on 3rd down.


Conclusion

We throw the ball way too much on third down, particularly 3rd and short.

Our receivers are not making critical catches, helping us move the chains and eat the clock.

I also want to break down who we target on 3rd and 4th downs. I'm just a bit short on time for that, might be able to get to it tonight.

Cool stats........Good work

A lot of times I would rather see a try at a deep pass on third down, than the predictable exact distance needed or just short of, whatever that happens to be.
I've been patient with the calls because of the learning curve with new personnel, but it's now time to push the envelope a little. I also agree that to go to the next level we need the playcalling to reflect confidence in our ability to gain that tough, "run it right up the middle", 2 yards or less. Csonka where are you IMHO that all starts with the play of the center and guards, cadence, and timing...done right we should be able to gain 2 yards. I remember watching the initial push of that '72 O-line and seeing Csonka drive at the soft spot...it didn't seem to happen real fast but it was a money play. BALL CONTROL
 
On 3rd and Long(7+ yards), supposedly we are 1 for 20, with the only conversion(3rd and 8) being a 10-yard pass to Bess at the end of the game last week.

- Of those 4 conversions, 2 were for Touchdowns, 1 rushing, 1 passing.

- Zero attempts were made via penalty nor taken away due to penalty.

In the San Diego game we had 16 attempts on 3rd and 4th down.

- 15 of those attempts were on 3rd down.

- 1 attempt was 4th down.

- We had 9 passing attempts and 6 rushing attempts.

- 11 of 15 we faced 5 yards or less.

- We were 7/15 on Third down, 1/1 on 4th down.

- One first down was awarded on an incomplete pass due to a PI call.

And finally we have the Houston game, we had 10 3rd down attempts in this game.

- All 10 attempts were 3rd down.

- 9 attempts were pass plays, 1 was a run.

- 6 of the 10 we faced 3rd and 5 yards or less.

- We converted 2/10 attempts.

- Zero conversions were awarded or nullified by penalty.

- One pass was intercepted on 3rd down.

On the Season we have faced 66 third and 4th down situations.

- 61 3rd down attempts.

- 5 4th down attempts.

- We are 4 out of 5 on converting 4th downs.

- We are 19 out of 61 on 3rd down conversions. (The 2 attempt discrepency is due to my inclusion of penalty downs.)

- 41 attempts were of 5 yards or less, leaving us 20 attempts with long situations.

- 4 out of 5 4th down attempts were 5 yards or less.

- Leaving 37 3rd down attempts at 5 yards or less.

- 50 attempts were pass plays. (Total 3rd and 4th down)

- 16 Attempts were Rushes. (Total 3rd and 4th down.)

- We have converted 10 out of 16 rush attempts (3rd and 4th down, two for Touchdowns)

- We have converted 13 out of 50 pass attempts (3rd and 4th down, two for Touchdowns)

- 2 passes were intercepted on 3rd down.


Conclusion

We throw the ball way too much on third down, particularly 3rd and short.

Our receivers are not making critical catches, helping us move the chains and eat the clock.

I also want to break down who we target on 3rd and 4th downs. I'm just a bit short on time for that, might be able to get to it tonight.

4 out of 5 coversions on 4th down. Makes you wonder why we didnt go for it twice in the Texans game, when it was 4th and a pubic hair! :shakeno:

I will try to keep this thread updated throughout the year and hopefully throw in some more breakdowns.

I'm currently working on who we target and I also want to break down which formations we are using if possible. (Shotgun, Wildfin, etc...)

Keep in mind though, this only really shows us the starting point and the ending point of each play. Without looking at film we will be unable to factor in other things such as how much time Penny had on pass plays, what the progression was and what order in the progression the intended receiver was, what defensive formations we were up against, etc....

I'd also like to start one up for our defense in a seperate thread, might be able to get to that this weekend.
 
Definitely interesting to see how often we throw on 3rd and short. Does Sparano not feel confident in Ronnie's 4.7 YPC average?
 
Great post!

I think the offensive coaches have outsmarted themselves by leaning on Pennington's short passing game in short third-down scenarios.

Just hand the ball to Ricky or Ronnie and/or run the Wildcat.

Just sounds like Rookie head coach thoughts. Im sure the more seasoned head coaches would run when they are confident in their running game while the less seasoned head coaches may believe the easier way to get a first down is to pass
