Well, we all have many things to say about today’s loss and the season in general. Once again, today it was proved that being a Dolphins fan is often frustrating and disillusioning. There are however, positive things to be observed about today’s loss at New England.

  • Joey Harrington: The stat sheet will show there is no real difference between him and Daunte Culpepper thus far. Yet it seemed the offense had more of a spark at times during this game than what we’ve seen all season. With Culpepper playing, good plays were sparse and inconsistent, with Joey I feel like our offense did a good job of picking up momentum and getting on a role, even though they were far from perfect. Whether or not the better play is due to the o-line’s play is tough to argue. They had multiple drive-killing penalties and gave up a critical sack late in the game. Harrington had a couple of bad picks, and they cost us, yet he seemed to get our offense in the game when we regularly look flat and hopeless. I don’t know about a definite QB issue, but I am very intrigued as to what Harrington could develop into. It seemed as though more receivers got involved, and is it me or do Harrington and McMichael have good chemistry? I think a healthy, rejuvenated Harrington could develop into something good.

  • Wes Welker: Once again, he always seems to get us out of trouble whether in the kicking game or making a nice catch in the most needed moment. He isn’t our number 1 guy, but he has become a key contributor and will be a big part of Dolphins success in the future.

  • O line pass blocking: Yes, they caved in a bit in the end and gave up a sack and began struggling against the pass rush. They also had a few silly flags. But we gave up only 1 sack instead of 5 or 6, and that has to be respected, especially against a New England team that ate Carson Palmer alive last week. The o line hasn’t been the only problem, but their improvement in this area will facilitate things greatly.

  • Run defense: We are very good on first and second down against the run. We rarely allow for big plays and because of this we often put our D in favorable third down situations. It’s only too bad our third down defense is pitiful.

Of course, we lost the game because we made some mistakes and had some bad play at crucial moments. Here are some of the negatives I observed.

  • Defensive line: I like the Matt Roth sightings lately and Taylor had a huge sack on that New England drive in the third as they were gaining momentum, but the line looked weak overall. Where is Vonnie Holliday? We got decent pressure on Brady but lacked our normal couple of sacks. If we would have played like any other game this season, we would have troubled Brady a lot more.

  • Third down defense: It does no good to have a good run defense if you cannot protect against the pass on third down. Particularly our secondary has a lot of trouble staying consistent. The way this team plays defense makes it so they stay on the field FOREVER because they stop the opponent on first and second down only to fold on third down to consequently stay on the field. Combine this with the fact that sometimes we stall on offense and you have an old, tired, unmotivated defense on the field late in the game when we need a stop the most. This is not part of the formula for this team to be successful, this defense has too many miles on it for that.

  • Secondary: With moments of solid play becoming more apparent, we still seem to have a problem staying consistent. We’ve seen good play at different times from different players, but none of those players have risen to the occasion full-time. Will Allen seems to be the furthest ahead, but he has had awful melt-down moments in the last two weeks. I don’t care what you read on this board, you have to call that pass interference in the NFL, that is the second time Allen leaves the opposing offense on the goal line because he was getting beat down field and could do nothing but interfere. If you have that happen once a game, it makes things a lot easier for the offense. The truth is, New England wasn’t shy about going for it on 4th down because our secondary is weak, and everyone knows it.

  • Olindo Mare/Special teams: What is with the special teams blunders this season. A fumble on a punt and a blocked and missed field goal today, plus more missed field goals and another blocked kick against Buffalo don’t make a good case for this unit. If Olindo makes that 50 yarder we are in great position. That shouldn’t have even been the case, as we should have never had a field goal blocked earlier. Welker and the punt covering unit made some good plays today but this is also an inconsistent part of our game.

I'd say you hit the nail right on the head with all of those. The biggest negative will be if JH doesn't get the start next week against the Jets. In my opinion, he earned it today. Trade DC to Oakland for a 2nd Rdr, and just pretend that episode never happened.

while this game was disappointing it was a positive game...i still believe we can get to .500... Next week game against the Jets i think we should and will win... then i think we will get green bay and be 3-4...we got to play better in the 4th quarter

Let me ask you something?? We scored 10 points today and gave up 213 yards of total offense to the what was, coming into the game, the top offensive unit in the NFL. We gave up 20 points, 17 of which were the product of our offense setting up NE with a short field. Yet, you have 3 of the 4 negatives being on the defensive side of the ball?? When will everybody admit that is offense is single handily killing this team?? I'll rip the defense apart if we ever lose a game 35-31 and have no turnovers but until then I don't think it's realistic to expect us to win every game 10-9.

Positives:

Harrington looking intelligent, until the last drive

Welker

I think the D-line did their job, the Pats sucked running.

Jason Taylor

Negatives:

Mare, love him..but he is not what he used to be

Saban and his misues of players/talent

Mularkey and his ill-advised play calling

Run blocking. To me it was obvious that the O-line didn't improve. Harrington just made the right choices.

Positives

1. Run D
2. Harrington getting rid of the ball and not taking sacks
3. O-line - pass blocking

Negatives

1. Coaching - too conservative. Take some chances throwing the ball down field...its killing the running game
2. Ronnie Brown - Average at best
3. special teams - 2 missed FGs, penalties and F-up on punt
4. Big penalty on the D...again.
5. Crucial drops and penalties on Offense...again.
6. Mare needs to be cut, now. He is a head-case.

These are just a few off the top of my head. Too many mistakes and nobody stepping up...including the coaching staff.

I agree with some of your positives and negatives. Positives - Joey did look good and it helped that the Dolphins went more to 3 and 5 step drops instead of 5 and 7. That helped Joey get the ball out quicker. NE didn't blitz as much as I thought they would.
The run defensive was much better today than they have most of the year. NE ran wild against Cincinnati last week but only average 2.3 ypc today.
Despite what many might think, the secondary looked good. Brady had his lowest completion percentage today because of several batted balls and he couldn't find any of his receivers except for the underneath dump offs.
Welker had a first half to remember. Running crisp routes and catching everything he could get his hands on.
Negatives. As with everygame this year. Penalties! (10) Turnovers! (3) and missed opportunites (too many to count).

I agree with what you are saying. Our offense definetey lags behind the defense. Yet the secondary has put our team in AWFUL situations. they are the reason the d stays on the field and thus loses momentum and burns out late in the game. How man blown third andlongs do you need to realize that. We have slid mments and then break down. I agree that the front seven have been doing well all season and for the most part put is in favorable positions. But if thie secondary held on at times, we would at least be .500 right now.

ya, harrington getting rid of the ball also cost us two interceptions, points, and the game. remember culpeppers not even healthy yet. harrington did what hes always done. nothing in the second half when it counts. you say you want joey? new england had 1 INTERCEPTION COMING INTO THIS GAME. joey is an interception machine. daunte hasnt thrown a pick in two games and has 3 through 4 games. joey will have two more if he plays next week

You are putting too much of the blame for some of those third down conversions on the secondary. Some of those came when the team was in a zone or against the linebackers.

You raise a very good point. Daunte has been improving and it will be a test for Nick Saban to decide what to do with this one. With the game ending in a loss and nearly identical stats to Culpepper, you cannot make a definite case for Harrington. Only to say that the offense got hot at times, and that has been non-existent with Culpepper, unless you count the couple drives last week against Houston, in a game where we looked awful on offense. For whatever reason, in the off season and in this game, McMichael appears when Harrington is on the field. Welker had a productive day and Chambers was doing some good things. I feel Daunte is the better player overall, but I believe Harrington has a lot less to correct and develop. He looked just as comfortable if not more with a system Daunte is supposed to have down, he got rid of the ball quicker, and he generated momentum at very key moments in the game (such as when our o line took us from 2-3 to 2-18 with penalties and Harrington and the passing game lead a touchdown drive from it).

I agree. The defense gave the offense ample oppurtunities to pull ahead of the pats, the entire 3rd quarter comes to mind. After 5 games The fins do have negatives on both sides of the ball. If we could score more than 10 points game, I'll start looking at the defense but until then it's really not worth talking about. Let's slam the secondary when we lose 35-31 not 20-10 17 of those points being the result of turnovers and a short field.

positives:
gotta say overall joey was a positive for the offense
2- o line protected better, there were also less blitzes and joey got the ball out quickly, its a symbiotic relationship, they help each other look good
3- overall defensive play, we shut down the running game and held brady to 140 yards passing.

negatives:
1- special teams, punting problem, missed fg opportunities, penalties. this is flat out execution issue, today was not good
2- turnovers, not just having them, which is a problem, but on our first drive, and all deep in our end resulting in 17 pts. without these turnovers we have amuch better chance of winning this game
3- run blocking, i know new england has an excellent front but we need to block better, period. i would have liked more run plays also, but at least we didn't completely abandon the running game

One of the negatives i failed to mention was the inability block for the run. I see people blaming Ronnie for not hitting the hole, and I see people blaming Mularkey for not running it more, but when we get 1 to 2 yards at best, its hard to call for running plays.
