49ers set to promote DL coach Jim Tomsula to head coach, per sources. Still ironing out details, but Tomsula expected to be 49ers next HC.

I'm told Adam Gase did not get the 49ers job. Instead, the team has decided to promote Jim Tomsula, who is currently on the staff.

WoW, there is a surprise. Poor crop of head coaches this year, imo. Though I guess we will have to wait a couple years to see how they all pan out.

Oh, I thought it was already known that the bills and jets would be stomping the dolphins twice a year. HOF coaches already.

Oh no! Continuity is alive and well in SF too. :ponder:

Wonder what fangio is gonna do?

Fangio is expected to leave the Niners. @RapSheet

One of the DC options #49ers coach Jim Tomsula is considering is Jason Tarver, though he has other options. He’s a fan of Tomsula

Seems like an odd pick. All I can put together from that hire is that he'll be York and Baalke's "Yes man". :idk: Possibly, just looking for a polar opposite persona from Harbaugh. IMO, they'll probably get polar opposite results as well.

:err:

The promotion of Tomsula represents some continuity -- he has been with the Niners for eight-plus years but was not tied to Harbaugh. The cynic will say Tomsula is a yes man to York and general manager Trent Baalke, the polar opposite of Fangio.

Well, I guess ESPN rightfully nailed me in that article (almost verbatim) as a cynic. :chuckle: I didn't realize his tenure with the team nor that he had any HC experience. Might have been NFL Europe, but experience none the less.

Slap in the face to the DC. Niners owner may be worse than Ross

very much agree. its why i was fairly relaxed about philbin staying

Tomsula was rumored to be the guy early on when Harbaugh left (him or Mangini), but it seemed like people went away from that. Very good DL coach, but jumping from a position coach to HC is very difficult... especially when you follow a guy like Harbaugh

What makes it worse is the 9ers were not letting Fangio interview for other DC jobs early in the process either.

As for the Ross stuff, well Ross's issues are being way too loyal (which ironically, Wayne Huizenga was bad at too), but if you look into what some other owners do and how they act, you'll appreciate Ross a little more.

I had to laugh at the descriptions from within the 49er organization. Notice that everybody went out of their way to describe Tomsula as a "teacher." It was the first or second trait they mentioned, almost without exception.

Suddenly that organization is brainwashed and controlled. Jed York in his pathetic press conference when Harbaugh's departure was announced scrambled for rationale, and the best he could come up with was that he wanted a teacher, implying that Harbaugh didn't qualify, and that the 49ers in their glory years were run by teachers like Walsh and Seifert.

Maybe it never occurred to him that Joe Montana, Ronnie Lott, Jerry Rice, Steve Young and others were relatively easy to coach. That ability was more innate than taught.

Anyway, I would never hire a head coach with a mustache. That guy is not handicapping the world correctly, IMO. Women don't trust men with facial hair, not as much as men without it. That shows up in political races all the time. I can't count how many bets I've won merely by opposing a candidate with facial hair. Jimmy the Greek figured that out in 1948 and made a tidy sum with Truman over Dewey.
