Defensive Tackle Ndamukong Suh

(On how it feels to start training camp) – “It feels good. It was a long day but a good day, just out here trying to work as hard as I can. I have a lot of rust to knock off, and it is exciting to be out here in the heat getting acclimated.”

(On how he has been received by his teammates) – “I have been lucky coming into this group, I have a great d-line – Cam (Wake), OV (Olivier Vernon), (Derrick) Shelby and all the guys brought me in and just showed me the ropes. It has been a good situation, especially since OTAs and mini-camp started so it was just like picking up from that time from when we started camp to then.”

(On what he has talked to Owner Stephen Ross about) – “Just asked me about practice, as simple as that. Good start.”

(On Owner Stephen Ross’ message to the team during practice) – “That is personal. He obviously wants us to play well and we should have a good year.”

(On what it is like to be a member of a talented defensive line) - “Like I said before, we look great on paper and it is always nice to look good on paper, but at the end of the day it is about what you do in those 16 games and obviously going into the playoffs hopefully but we have a lot of work ahead of ourselves – camp first and foremost, then we have preseason. It is just about going through the process and making sure you take care of business and mold as a unit. Once you start making plays and start to create that comradery and making plays off each other that is when you have a chance to become good.”

(On his communication with DE Cameron Wake) – “If we just started communicating today, it would be too late. We had to start that back in OTAs and mini-camp, like I said, and even before that. Once I knew I was coming down here reaching out to him, understanding this is his defense line and I am coming to be a part of it. I just want to understand particularly my role – how I can help, how I can help him make more plays, get more sacks. I am a selfless player so I want to see him be successful and I want to be successful myself as a competitor and go from there. Communication is key.”

(On his ability to make others around him better) – “I think at the end of the day it can be a combination of everything. You don’t to just be out there by yourself and this is the ultimate team game so your teammates have to produce as well as yourself has to produce. The best way to do that is to work together as a unit, especially on the defensive line and offensive line – guys be able to protect each other, help each other, make plays and feed each other for plays. That is just the way it goes.

(On how he sees his role on the Miami Dolphins) – “I don’t think my role is defined in any particular way. I think I can help with many different facets throughout this defense. I really don’t want to limit myself. I have always been a guy, even though I have been in the league and understand what I am good at and what I can get better at, I want to continue to expand my game and find new ways to help and be a part of this particular defense.”

(On Executive Vice President of Football Operations Mike Tannenbaum wanting him to be a leader on the team) – “Mike Tannenbaum definitely challenged me and it is a challenge that I always accept no matter what. As I have grown up and understood in the league, being hopefully one of the elite guys, to be good and to be great as I want to be you have to go out there and help the guys around you, especially younger guys bringing them along once you understand your role of what you have to accomplish. Jordan Phillips, (Anthony Johnson), guys like that you want to be able to help. Obviously they have great talent or they wouldn’t be here, but understanding how to be pros and I had to have that same thing when I was here. Kyle Vaden Bosch, Corey Williams, guys like that helped me get to where I am at right now.”

(On if he thinks he can already be considered great) – “No, definitely not. I have a lot of work ahead of myself. Today, I was actually disappointed with my play today so I have plenty of work to do.”

(On his reaction to the messages the team received from Owner Stephen Ross and Head Coach Joe Philbin) – “We have a lot of work ahead of ourselves. 8-8 is not acceptable, and for me, I am a guy that if we are not in the playoffs and we are not competing for a championship then it’s a failure to the season. At the end of the day, we have a ton, ton of work, this is the first day we obviously took care of business and did our jobs for the most part, but we have a lot of growth to go as a unit defensively, defensive line wise, offensive line wise, quarterbacks, all of us have lot of work to do. We have to continue to go out there and work and understand what our task at hand is each every day, accomplish that and the obviously each and every single day build off of that.”

there was a play during scrimmage yesterday I saw that summed him up. him and Mitchell read the snap count, and were in the backfield and were all over Tannehill. Our guards (or Pouncey) have to be better after dealing with this beast all day

Doesn't sound like that on the field thug persona. I think he is going to be a real strong asset to this team.

Love me some SUH. He has grown up and learned from his mistakes. Showing respect for Cam and the Dline. It's cool that he said if they are not in the post season playing for a championship the seasons a failure.

Ndamukong comes across as a highly intelligent, well spoken leader who is eager to contribute. While we were all aware of his physical dominance up in Detroit from watching his games, I did not appreciate the terrific character that comes with it. He is a natural strong leader and his presence in the locker room should be very good. Provided he doesn't lose his cool on the field, we appear to have recruited a great team guy, who will help the other players.
