Quarterback Ryan Tannehill
(On just having a birthday and if he did anything excited) – “I’m getting old (joking). No, not too exciting, workout, hang out with the wife, easy as it gets.”
(On Owner Stephen Ross’ message about winning this year and if that’s what he told the team) – “It wasn’t verbatim, but that’s his expectation, that’s our expectation. That’s why we’re here. That’s why we’ve been here. That’s what we’ve been working to do. Obviously, we haven’t gotten it done the past few years, but we’re not here for that, we’re here for this year and what we can do this year. I feel like we have every piece that we can need and it’s a matter of how we can come together as a team, how we can perform during crunch time. That’s what we’re working at here and for the next however many weeks it is until the Super Bowl.”
(On if there is a different feeling this year on day one than the past few years, and how he feels coming into it) – “There’s always excitement on day one. There’s always excitement to get on the field, to be together. But you feel it in the locker room, you feel it out on the field. This is a good group of guys, good people and we want to win. We want to win a championship. We’re all here for the same reason. I feel like we have a selfless team of guys that are here for the right reasons. It’s going to take us a long way.”
(On having some new weapons on offense this year and who he’s most looking forward to playing with) – “It’s tough to pick one because we have so many. We really have a stacked group all of the way around, from our backfield, to our tight ends, the receiver group, everywhere you look, we have weapons. It’s going to be fun for me to be able to spread the ball around.”
(On Head Coach Joe Philbin saying that this group of receivers is better suited to his skills and if he agrees with that) – “Yeah, I feel like they are good receivers. They can run this offense the way we want it to be run – body control, being able to use different styles of receivers that we have. We have, DeVante (Parker) is hurt right now, but big body, strong hands. You have Kenny (Stills), a smooth, fast guy. Jarvis (Landry) can do it all for us. Greg (Jennings), savvy veteran, great route runner. So you look at those guys. Rishard (Matthews), big strong body as well. Those guys have all of the weapons that we need and, as a coaching staff and an offense, we put those guys in a position to succeed and be able to get them the ball.”
(On how he feels the offense is coming along through the offseason) – “We’re definitely trending in the right direction. Obviously, day one is always a little rusty, just getting in the flow again. But I felt like it was a good start for us. We didn’t complete every ball and there were mistakes out there, but if you take a look at where we started last year at this time, we’re light years ahead.”
(On if it always amazes him about the fans that come out to practice) – “It adds to the excitement. I think that’s what makes training camp fun is you feel the energy, you can hear the guy yelling right now, just the energy of the fans and the excitement for the year. They’re excited just like we are. We wouldn’t have a job if it wasn’t for the fans. You have to appreciate and enjoy them being out there.”
(On if he feels a sense of that enough is enough and it’s time to get to the playoffs) – “I felt that way for a long time. I’m excited about this year and everything that we can do.”
(On if there is any doubt in his mind that this is a playoff team) – “No, no doubt. I’m superbly confident in this team and what we can do. Now, we have a lot of work to do until we get there, but I’m really excited about what we have and what we can do.”
(On the owner talking about winning on the first day and if it resonates more when the owner says it) – “I think so. I think our mindset from the spring to yesterday in team meetings has been no excuses, we’re finding a way to get it done. And being confident about it. I think that’s a little different than times past, just starting with the head man, Coach (Joe) Philbin, Mr. (Stephen) Ross, just the confidence that this organization has. We’re doing everything we can to find an edge and win. No expense has been spared. We have a brand new cafeteria, added a bunch of people to the staff of the building as far as sports science, performance coaches. We’re really doing everything we can as an organization. That shows Mr. Ross’ commitment and I think the guys are really buying in and it’s going to pay off throughout the entire season.”
(On finding an edge) – “Well, it’s a combination of everything. I think you look at all of the sports science and we’ve kind of been doing it for a couple of years now. We’re finally at the point where we have enough data to take a step back, see the big picture of trends and what to look for, what are the flags, what can you do personally to recover better, to sleep better and be ready to go each and every day. It’s kind of been a learning process over the past few years of just accumulating this data and now we can really apply it and use it every single day.”
(On Head Coach Joe Philbin in the past saying that they have three championships to win – the AFC East Championship, AFC Championship, Super Bowl, and if his message to players was similar) – “Same message, same message. That’s what you want to hear from your head coach is confidence that we’re here to win a championship. We’re not here just to win a few games, we’re here to win a championship. That’s what we’re here to do. I feel like if you ask each and every man on this team, and they’ll tell you the same thing – we’re here to win a championship. We’re not wasting our time out here each and every day sweating, losing 10 pounds at practice, to not be playing in January and February.”
(On Head Coach Joe Philbin being vocal about winning a championship and why he thinks that is) – “I don’t know why, but I like it. I don’t know the specific reason behind it, but I love it. I love the confidence. I love the mindset that it instills in the entire team. It’s contagious, it starts with him, if he’s confident, if he’s outspoken about what we’re going to do, what we expect to do, then it’s contagious throughout the entire team.”
