While we wait patiently for the Dolphins to re-take the field for training camp, The Finsiders’ John Congemi and O.J. McDuffie went back over what they saw during the offseason program. During the non-contact practices open to the media, both Finsiders analysts noticed several players stand out to them during this time. Here’s a list of seven that impressed the guys during OTAs, and because of the non-contact nature of the practices, the following are all skill position players.
Ryan Tannehill
O.J. McDuffie: In practices we’ve already seen hit him the deep ball, his anticipation is noticeably better, and he looks very comfortable in year two with this offense. He’s truly got a grasp of this offense, and that’s very promising.
John Congemi: With all the weapons that this offense has, I think Ryan Tannehill is poised to have a breakout season in terms of getting those 4,000 yards and getting closer to 30 touchdowns through the air. It’s going to be hard to contain Tannehill in his second year in this offense if he continues to grow and progress, and he’s already shown that in the few opportunities we’ve had to evaluate him so far this year.
Brent Grimes
McDuffie: Brent Grimes was Brent Grimes. He had some spectacular days, had a couple great interceptions, and nobody really caught anything on him. Anything his way wasn’t being caught by our wide receivers, and a lot of times, quarterbacks just avoided him. He takes advantage of the opportunity to make plays and makes the most of those opportunities.
Jarvis Landry
McDuffie: He’s picked up right where he left off at the end of the season, and he’s flowing into training camp. He’s running routes well as usual, catching everything thrown his way. He’s catching some in small windows, but for the most part he’s running his routes real well and getting open. You have to love a guy who take his craft so seriously as well. I expect big things from him, and “Juice” seems ready for year two in this league.
Congemi: Landry may have had the play of the offseason program with his one-handed catch. It was an unbelievable yet seamless play. He didn’t break stride and just settled down by the goal line and made a beautiful one-handed grab. Landry is one of those guys that turns the spectacular into the routine, and he’s been pretty special so far.
Greg Jennings
McDuffie: I thought Greg Jennings would be more a role player out there for this team, but through the offseason program he’s been a superstar out there for us. He’s catching everything thrown his way, is able to run every route and get deep, and can play all the different wideout positions. He’s impressed me more than anyone at the wide receiver position.
Congemi: We saw the benefit and the value of what he’s going to bring to the Dolphins. When injuries befell DeVante Parker and Kenny Stills during OTAs, Jennings emerged. He can do it on the inside, he can do it on the outside, and is very smooth as a route runner. He’s patient, yet explosive, and he finds a way to get open and separate. That’s going to be valuable in 2015. No matter how he plays, he’ll always find the ball in his hands. He’ll be a good security blanket for Ryan Tannehill.
