Got in a debate yesterday with a Raider fan who brought up something I hadn't heard before. He thinks the Dolphins had an easy season and thats how they went undefeated. If they had played the Oakland raiders at the time it wouldn't have happened. Just wondered if any dolphin historians have the list of who they beat that year and whether thery played some of the better teams then. Thanks

Yeah...everyone brings that up. Can't blame a team for playing the hand they were dealt. The one thing NO ONE mentions is that the Dolphins had to go on the road to Pittsburgh in the AFC Championship game. The NFL did a rotating playoff method, not home field advantage. Can you image if New England had to go to San Diego for the AFC Championship last year?

The strength of schedule was low that year, but they played the teams the league gave them. They are not the first team to have a softer schedule, nor will they be the last. They are however, the only team to go undeafeated. I don't care what your schedule is, if you do that you are very special. They never lost, and you can't argue that another team(regardless of what year) could have beat them. How can a team that never lost, lose?

I hate the Patriots, but I think they would have beaten San Diego last year no matter where they played. The Chargers were not strong enough to handle them. Our only hope in the AFC would have been the Colts WITH a healthy Freeney. Thank God for the Giants and small miracles!!!

Well, the Patriots also had a weak schedule this year. I believe up until around week 12, the Patriots schedule was weaker then the Phins.

Once u get to the Playoffs you are obviously playing hard teams.

So, that just goes to show you that even with a easy schedule it is still very very very difficult to do. This is with a team (Pats) who is arguably the best team ever in the NFL with a very easy schedule as well.

No, the regular season schedule wasn't exactly brutal. But eight games were in the division out of 14 games and the Jets were 7-7 while the rest were just terrible. Nothing we could do about that.

We beat the Patriots 52-0. People just say we had an easy season because the teams we beat that year did not have a great record. But the bottom line is we had the #1 defense, and #1 offense that year, and won every game.

Wrong! Totally wrong!

They beat....

San Diego
Cleveland
Indy
Dallas
Washington
Philly
Pittsburgh
Giants

Geez, who else would you have liked them to play? And just like us in '72 they had their division games, though only six, vs pretty bad teams.

As said before, thank God for the Giants or we would have never heard the end of it since they had the regular season advantage over us big time.

They also did it without Griese for most of the year.

also #1 in special teams

as great as the patsies were last year they were not #1 in defense and offense, just an example of how dominant the 72 phins really were

The Raiders, the fans of raiders, the fans of every team in the nfl except the Fin fans can **** me! Were undefeated......hows that taste!

Well we won our playoff games by 1 score (not to mention 3 regular season games) so the schedule wasnt as easy as everyone plays it out to be. There were some real nail biters during that season

If the Raiders were any good "at the time", wouldn't the Dolphins have had to face them in the playoffs? They weren't there to face, if I recall correctly.

If the '72 Dolphins had it so easy, why hasn't anyone else gone undefeated? I'm sure there have been easier schedules than theirs in the past 35 years.

Just sayin'.

Many other teams have had equally "soft" schedules in the history of the NFL. How many of them went undefeated and won the Super Bowl? If it's no big deal, why hasn't at least one other team done it? The "powerhouse" and "undefeated" Patriots couldn't pull it off and they were the favorites. It's obviously nothing but jealousy that motivates people to put down the '72 Dolphins. Like Merc said, "Call us when you're on our street."
