Should the NFL allow teams to keep more than just 53 players on the roster?

Practice squad goes from 8 to 10, cap room goes up but basic roster stays at 53. I would like it to go up to 55, wouldn't you?

PS went from 8 to 10 no?

If they go to 18 weeks, the roster size will go up. Which I strongly believe they will, in the near future.

The should also let all 53 be eligible to play on Sunday. It's the NFL for crying out loud... do they need to force teams to play players out of position if they get a couple injuries at the same position?

PS is going up to 10.

So technically NFL teams can keep 63 players on the roster.

53 is plenty for a 16 games. Keep in mind most won't even play.

2nd and 3rd string QB's rarely play (or you hope they don't).

4th-5th string players mostly ST.

I don't like counting those 10 practice squad players as part of your roster, since they can't play in a game unless they're on the 53 man roster and they can be signed by any team at any time. For example if Orleans Darkwa were on Miami's practice team the Dolphins have no more rights to him than the Saints or Cowboys. A positive spin on the practice squad system is that it creates a pool of 320 players that are considered potential NFL players that Miami can shop from at anytime. If Miami needs a qb they don't have to resign Lobato, they can draw from the best player in the pool regardless of which team he's practicing with.

This is all true, but if you sign a player from another team's practice squad, he must be placed on the active 53 man roster for at least 4 weeks.

Fantastic point.

What I would like to see is every team getting 2 or 3 bye weeks. One in weeks 5-8, a second in weeks 9-12, and if the season is extended to 18 games, a third in weeks 13-16. So, the extending the season to 18 games adds 2 more weeks I get to enjoy football, and the extra bye week or weeks adds another week or two. Potentially that would be up to 4 more weeks of football.

Since every player claims that the season is year round anyway ... it wouldn't be as much of a change as it sounds. Two weeks of healing when they need it most in the meat of the season. And two extra games done by eliminating 2 preseason games.

Expanding the roster makes a lot of sense when the season is that long.

Does anyone know the reasoning behind the policy that the NFL has 53 man rosters but less allowed to be active? Isn't it 47 active? Regardless, what is the rationale for this? Why not let all 53 be active? There has to be a reason.

53 is plenty. There are already a dozen or so players that don't ever see the field on Sunday's. Do we really need more players sitting on the sidelines?

Good question that seems difficult to find an answer to. Here is a good article about how the practice squad works and the new rule changes.

since teams already have a practice squad. to me, it only makes sense they allow all 53 on active roster to dress Sunday's.
