I started a thread not long ago with the Head Coach candidate poll. It gave us fans here at Finheaven the opportunity to vote on our favorite candidates as individuals.
Well as of today here are some of the results:
http://www.finheaven.com/showthread.php?372681-Head-Coach-Candidate-Poll-Who-do-you-like-most
1. Mike Shanahan with 44.17% of the Votes
2. Hue Jackson with 27.9%
3. Tom Coughlin with 21.25%
4. Adam Gase with 9.58%
That's a huge drop-off in votes between the first 3 and Gase. Many people have mentioned that the reason the top 3 guys are getting all the votes is because of their prior head coaching experience. That may very well be the case. Gase was not in my top 3 guys to be the new Head Coach of my beloved Miami Dolphins. At the time that I created the poll I had talked to my brother and said to him, "If we hire Adam Gase to be our head coach, it would be the equivalent of taking an Offensive Lineman top 10 in the Draft." While not the "sexy" or "splash" pick that I, and I'm sure many people on this board, was looking for, it was a pick that might be needed and could work for Miami.
Well here we are and Gase is our Coach whether we like it or not. I've been back on Finheaven reading about what people feel about the Gase hire. My opinion at the time was that I wasn't excited, but I wasn't upset either. Sort of like when we draft Jake Long, Mike Pouncey or Juwan James. Those weren't sexy picks, but we needed those guys. I've read how people love this hire and they say things like, "He's going to turn our offense around!" or "At Denver he did great things with Peyton," "He helped a terrible Chicago Offense get better in 1 season," ect.
Then there is the other side of the story. People who don't think he'll work out. "He'll be gone in a couple of years," "He doesn't have any HC experience," ect. We've all read these things.
There is something that I feel was incredibly important about what we did with getting Adam Gase that I haven't seen mentioned much. I think back to when we were hiring our past HC's and GM. The FO missed out on their #1 guy many times. It made the organization look like a bunch of idiots. Think back to the Harbaugh debacle. What about how we missed out on our top 2 GM candidates and we settled for Hickey. If I recall correctly Philbin wasn't our top target either.
This offseason has been different thus far though. They let go of Hickey and they are saying, "Grier is OUR guy!" and now I feel like they went into the coaching search and felt that Gase was their guy. I think it was Mando or Laconfora that said we were high on Gase. Well it seems as though the FO said, "Gase is OUR guy!," and they went and got their guy. They did miss out on their top target and they didn't have to settle for someone else. I don't hear people, except for some people here on Finheaven who don't like the hire, saying that the Dolphins look like idiots or that we didn't get our target.
That alone makes me feel good about what the Dolphins did with their head coach search. It may not mean much to some people but I hope it means something to some of us here to know that didn't come out of this coaching search from the gate looking like idiots because we didn't get Harbaugh or Fisher chose Tennesee, or whatever. None of that this time around and I really hope it works out. I hope that our non sexy head coach hiring is the equivalent of a Lineman who is drafted in round 1 but goes on to have lots of Probowls, or in this case Playoff Victories and Super Bowls!!!!
