1) What vanilla play calling?

a) The Bucs first team D stacked the line continuously with 8-9 in the box showing blitz with various combinations coming in and the rest falling back into coverage. I doubt the Phins OL was ready for this in the second game of the preseason and, thus, the penalties and sacks.

b) After the first Bucs drive, Capers started playing some blitzing games himself. He sent in at least 5-6 different blitz packages for the first team D. The Bucs OL was not ready for this either and gave up penalties and sacks.

c) Also, of interest, Crowder was playing MLB and Zach was shifted to SSLB in the standard 4-3 set on three plays that I counted.

d) Finally, I caught McMike lining up in the lead FB position in an I formation in front of Brown on one play.

2) Draft Ronnie Brown in your FFL league. Brown had over 60 all purpose yards in a quarter and a half of play against stacked Bucs fronts. The difference between last preseason and this is like night and day. Brown showed excellent patience in picking through 8-9 man fronts for 4 yard gains. On pass plays, Brown usually makes the first tackler miss and gets into the secondary. Ronnie has not had a bad play so far in the preseason.

3) Despite Jason Allen's teething pains trying to catch up after his hold out, the starting Miami secondary is actually providing tight coverage. Simms only real success came from throwing low and away from his receivers to thread the coverage. However, the secondary is pretty thin as the second half showed and Miami sure could use the injured players back again.

4) There is nothing wrong with Hagan's hands. God must have made him drop balls at the Senior Bowl so he would fall to Miami. Both of Hagan's receptions were over the middle snagging passes thrown low or behind him where he got drilled immediately after the catch. Hagan will be challenging for the #3 WR position.

5) When did Gibson decide to show up and play football off of the practice squad? Like Hagen, Gibson is another big target. However, Gibson has shown the ability to run after the catch. Gibson has probably passed the injured Campbell to #5 and may very well be challenging mighty mite for time at #4. Gibson came on the field as soon as the first team left. I wouldn't mind seeing him fill in at the #3 position with the starters for a play or two against Carolina to see what he can do against a starting secondary.

6) With all this depth at WR, is it any surprise that the Pats, Jets and Bills all sent scouts to look at the Phins backup WRs in this game?

7) Play of the Day: I could not catch his number, but some Bucs OL managed to block both Zach and Crowder on a single lunge on the second Alstott run, knocking Crowder out of the play and deflecting Zach. Its tough enough getting to one of these LBs, nevertheless two at one time.

:D

I'm currently watching the replay of the game, and I will agree with you on a lot of points.

The Bucs defense looked good because they were doing a lot of delayed blitzes. The only guy on the Oline that really struggled was Anderson.

Outside of the bad TD, Jason Allen did not look that bad. There was a play in the 1st quarter he got ran over, but that was because Zach came from the side, and hit the RB over him.

The secondary as a whole did not look too bad. Will Allen,Andre Goodman, and Renaldo Hill in particular stood out to me.

Wilkinson,Evans, and Traylor all do a good job of getting pressure up the middle.

Rex Hadnot (aka Sexy Rexy) will make the pro bowl.

Agree 100% percent on all accounts. Nice summary.

Agreed on everything man, nice write up. The vanilla play calling is getting annoying, i know it's only pre-season but we need to start going a little deeper.

I really did not see much Vanilla playcalling. It was not Wanny's run up the middle 3 times, and pass to CC. There were a lot of pulls and draws called. The running plays were working nicely with Ronnie. The passing plays were a little harder to judge since Tampa was doing a lot of blitzing.

good adjustment goin to a 3-5 step drop to get things going..

Dolphins 1st Team defense has yet to allow a TD or a third down conversion wich is pretty good considering both teams were in the playoffs last season..

Agreed, but I dont think there's been a pass longer than 25 yards yet. The only one i could think of that might have been that long is the gibson catch and run.

nice info amigo.. wish i got to see the game. sounds like improvements in all facets for the starting groups, that is awesome!! i think saban will not show much of a long passing game until we get to the real thing in pittsburg, that does not mean we aren't working on it in practices

I would like to see Bell play in place of Tillman in the secondary. Mitchell looked a whole lot better this week than last. I also really like the Evans pick, the kid is going to be a good player. Harrington made some incredible passes last night also.

that was really good i didn't see the game but i will... God bless DVR but the only thin that is missin that i haven't seen yet is a 4 WR set on off to see what would the D from the other team would do when they see what we have all on the field at the sametime wow i can't even imagine

I agree that Ronnie is doing much better this year than last, but he's had a few bad plays.

On pass protection he got pushed right back into Culpepper and he saw his assignment coming.

Plus, he still fails to show that elite vision. On a few plays he missed a ton of yards by plowing into the pile instead of finding pretty clear seams.

I didn't know that! With all the injuries we've had, that's really an amazing statistic. Thanks!
