1) What vanilla play calling?
a) The Bucs first team D stacked the line continuously with 8-9 in the box showing blitz with various combinations coming in and the rest falling back into coverage. I doubt the Phins OL was ready for this in the second game of the preseason and, thus, the penalties and sacks.
b) After the first Bucs drive, Capers started playing some blitzing games himself. He sent in at least 5-6 different blitz packages for the first team D. The Bucs OL was not ready for this either and gave up penalties and sacks.
c) Also, of interest, Crowder was playing MLB and Zach was shifted to SSLB in the standard 4-3 set on three plays that I counted.
d) Finally, I caught McMike lining up in the lead FB position in an I formation in front of Brown on one play.
2) Draft Ronnie Brown in your FFL league. Brown had over 60 all purpose yards in a quarter and a half of play against stacked Bucs fronts. The difference between last preseason and this is like night and day. Brown showed excellent patience in picking through 8-9 man fronts for 4 yard gains. On pass plays, Brown usually makes the first tackler miss and gets into the secondary. Ronnie has not had a bad play so far in the preseason.
3) Despite Jason Allen's teething pains trying to catch up after his hold out, the starting Miami secondary is actually providing tight coverage. Simms only real success came from throwing low and away from his receivers to thread the coverage. However, the secondary is pretty thin as the second half showed and Miami sure could use the injured players back again.
4) There is nothing wrong with Hagan's hands. God must have made him drop balls at the Senior Bowl so he would fall to Miami. Both of Hagan's receptions were over the middle snagging passes thrown low or behind him where he got drilled immediately after the catch. Hagan will be challenging for the #3 WR position.
5) When did Gibson decide to show up and play football off of the practice squad? Like Hagen, Gibson is another big target. However, Gibson has shown the ability to run after the catch. Gibson has probably passed the injured Campbell to #5 and may very well be challenging mighty mite for time at #4. Gibson came on the field as soon as the first team left. I wouldn't mind seeing him fill in at the #3 position with the starters for a play or two against Carolina to see what he can do against a starting secondary.
6) With all this depth at WR, is it any surprise that the Pats, Jets and Bills all sent scouts to look at the Phins backup WRs in this game?
7) Play of the Day: I could not catch his number, but some Bucs OL managed to block both Zach and Crowder on a single lunge on the second Alstott run, knocking Crowder out of the play and deflecting Zach. Its tough enough getting to one of these LBs, nevertheless two at one time.
