Obviously we are now in search of a new Head Coach, and in my opinion, a new philosophy of how we do things. Whether we’d like to admit it or not, Nick has made us the laughing stock of the NFL, and dammit if we’re not gonna do something about it. In light of this, I am putting a four point plan of attack out there for all to see.
1. Checks and Balances Between the Front Office and the Coaching Staff- No more dictators for the Miami Dolphins. There needs to be synergy in all aspects of our football organization, and that starts with more responsibility being passed around between the FO and the Coaches. Who gets the final call? That depends on who we have in there. I would make a hard run at Scott Pioli, offering him the control and money that Bill never could. In this case, as GM, he’d get the call. If we are unable to land a top, proven GM like Scott, we stick with Mueller and split power to an extent, but Scott is the first call I make.
2. Our New Head Coach- Hire a young and hungry Head coach, someone who can grow with the team we have here and shepherd us through this trying time. Someone in their 30's or early 40's who is an NFL guy through and through is preferable. My list begins with Brian Schottenheimer:
- Brian Schottenheimer-Jets OC- what he has done with average talent on the Jets offensive side of the ball is nothing short of amazing. He’s been in the NFL for eight years. Take a look at the people he has coached under(read: learned from) and you’ll see why I am so fond of him. Steve Spurrier, Dick Vermeil, his father Marty, Cam Cameron to name a few, and this is before moving to the Jets and learning the NE system of organization and discipline. And he’s a Florida guy on top of it all. He is my #1 choice by leaps and bounds.
-Josh McDaniels-Pats OC/QB- Another Brian type, I don’t like him as much as Brian but we could do worse. He’s kept the Pats offense effective working with subpar recievers.
-Will Muschamp-Auburn DC- It gets dicey here. Will is not an NFL guy per se, but he did have great success here before Nick betrayed him and hired Capers behind his back. Honestly if we offered either of the first 2 choices, we wouldn’t get this far down the list.
-Jim Mora Jr.-Ex HC- I like him more than most, I believe the debacle in Atlanta wasn’t all his fault, but we wouldn’t get this far down the list anyway, Schottenheimer will accept if offered.
3. LEAVE THE DEFENSE ALONE- Our defense has carried our team for years, and it’s been even better in recent years IMO. Keep Dom Capers if possible, if not him, promote Dan Quinn to DC, as our D-line has obviously been the best unit of the D. Stay with the 3-4, there is NOTHING wrong with the defense. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
4. Begin the Youth Movement, Weed Out the Weak Links- Underachievers need to be shipped off this team with a quickness. I’m looking at you Chambers. And we need to begin listening to offers for our older players. I love guys like JT, ZT and Kevin Carter as much as anyone here, but the fact of the matter is we are not going to be in a position to win big for at least a couple years, holding onto them is bad for us, and bad for them.
I'd love to hear opinions.
