why didnt we draft a qb at all last year? just doesnt make any sense what were they thinking.

Because Saban thought that we could get a better one this year in the draft.

With bringing in Gus there were other needs more pressing.

However, I do agree with the "better choices this year" comment. There are better options this year than last....cough*Harrington*cough

it was, because we needed a QB that had already played in the new system, besides Alex Smith was not the deal Saban wanted!!!!

As much as I hate to agree with that cuz im not a big fam of Gus but if we hadnt of picked him up we would have drafted a qb. But what ever Saban does will be best for the organization.

You have to be joking right. The worst option out there is Harrington. I mean come on have you watched this guy play. He is worse then any qb that has been on our roster for the last 5 years or so. I would be happier if we brought Ray Lucas back then sorry *** Harrington. I have seen him play in Detroit at least 20 times and he has sucked every game I have attended or watched. He is worse then Sage and Gus and although I havent seen Cleo play my gut feeling is he is worse then him.

Once Smith was off the board there was nobody the team felt was value. (The closest one was Orton) I wanted a QB as much as anyone last year and I wouldn't have drafted one the way things shook out.

Saban was brand new, and we had AJ Feeley/Frerotte battling for #1, with Sage as the #3.

Saban probably wanted to assess our QBs, and give Feeley (and to a lesser extent, Sage) the chance to blossom into a NFL starting QB...

Once Feeley was shown to NOT be the answer, Saban grabbed Cleo (with promise), and will address the situation now. :cooldude:

Make haste slowly....

Most people don't agree with this thought, but my feeling is that Saban and Linehan felt that AJ had made enough strides to become more consistent. They brought in Gus as the backup guy and the guy to mentor/tutor AJ and the rest of the offense. I thought that Saban owed it to the organization to give AJ the opportunity to show he was worth the trade. He didn't get that opportunity with Wanny. He then went out and proved he was not the guy and that left us with Gus. I don't think Saban would have left the hands of the team in Gus' hands without thinking that AJ was closer.

JMHO, but it may be the one mistake or personnel misjudgement he made all last year.

He did go and get Brock [I-can't-win-with-very-good-talent-at-the-college-level] Berlin, but he was just camp fodder...

Agreed, just what we need, another Jeff Tedford product that didn't/can't make it in the pros....

For those who don't know, Harrington was AJ Feeley's BACKUP until Feeley hurt his elbow and missed 2/3 of the season at Oregon....

I think Orlovsky would have been a perfect late round pick, but i guess Saban didnt trust Spielmans opinion on that one.

Ding, Ding, Ding!!! Thank you for the correct response. This is a fact that most of people on this site seem to ignore. Harrington was AJ "Touchy" Feeley's backup that didn't get his shot until Feeley went down. That means that before the injury, Feeley was the better Qb of the two (and we know just how Good he is). Harrington was riding the pine behind a guy that makes poor decisions. Please keep them him away from South Florida.

Smith was gone when we picked at 2nd and there was not a trade of enough value to trade out of the spot. With not options to pick elsewhere, Saban opted to select BPA at #2.

Simple as that.
