Last year around this time, everybody was trashing Wanny for the lack of discipline that our players were displaying on the field. According to most around here, the false starts, offsides, pass interferences and personal fouls being committed by our players was a direct result of the coaching staff not instilling discipline in our players. Now this year, we are seeing the same types of stupid and unneccesary penalties by some of our best players. Do you think still think it's the coaching staff's fault?

P.S. This is not meant to be a Wanny vs. Saban debate just so you know!

A couple of things though, first this a new sheme offense and defense. Whenever you start blitzing (especially after never blitzing before see: the past decade) the crucial point is getting a good jump at the snap. That requires timing, feel, and guessing. We'll be better at that before the end of the season. On offense there are actual blocking schemes unlike years past. Its complicated and the team is still trying to gel.

The Wanny years had zero gameplanning and everything was vanilla. So if you have pre-snap penalties, its ridiculous because you weren't asked to do anything other than engage the player directly in front of you.

I think it has more to do with the players being undisciplined from the Wanny era and have developed bad habits. Until Saban gets rid of these type of players, it will continue. If you look at the players he has brought in during the offseason, they are the ones that seemed more disciplined and not committing stupid penalities.
