After we lost in our final SB appearance, Shula did absolutely nothing with the team. The closest thing we've been to a SB is losing to the Bills in the AFC Championship.

....which we did at least make it to. I loved how the media and a lot of fans had the idea that the game passed Shula by, yet he hadn't had a losing season in 10 years.

The game never passed Shula by. The reality was that we had poor talent (for which he was indeed responsible) but he made them look half decent due to excellent coaching. His coaching never declined in my opinion. Most of the later teams were 6-10 at best in terms of talent.

However, he did get away from his core beliefs when it came to recruitment. Instead of going for tough, smart guys he could mould (as in the early years), he tried to follow the trend of finding the best natural athletes thinking he could coach them into stars. Shula was a smart guy who always did a lot better finding like minded players. It is a mistake that the current FO have followed - smart players who can actually play are a better bet than amazing athletes with potential (or even worse, average athletes with great physical attributes which seems to have been the fad around here for a while....)
