now i saw a few threads and read a few articles yesterday talking about how big and sluggish Phillip Merling looked at rookie camp yesterday. Now i know most of you take it with a grain of salt but some of you may be mad or upset becasue we could have had someone different with that pick.

But with him coming off an injury and not being able to workout or stay in football shape he is going to look sluggish until he gets in to football shape. He will get his step back and be the player we were expecting.

Now i know from personal experience that coming off an injury that even though you think you are going all out you really protect yourself and go as hard as you feel like and trick yourself into thinking your giving it everything you got. I was a pitcher until a few years ago and i had some problems with my arm and shoulder and came back after a rest period and went hard but wasn't performing to the level i could even though i was told it was ok to go all out turns out i was protected myself. And i am sure even though Merling has been told he can go all out (he is going hard dont make that mistake) but he is holding back some until he feels comfortable that he can make all his moves and take the contact at an NFL level. He and our Defense will be fine so rest easy

Lets give him some time and see what he has before we judge just yet....

He'll be fine, I have a customer that just had a hernia operation, he works construction and he just turned 60, 2 weeks later he was helping his son move a washer and drier (against his doctor's wishes of course) but anyway he is fine after the move. Technology has come a long way, he'sa young kid, he'll bounce back from it. My friend went to Clemson on a track scholarship, he says this kid Merling is a warrior and that Dolfans are going to really appreciate him as a player. He's a standup guy who works his tail offf everyday. As much as everybody talks about Taylor, I would like to see him start at DE and drop Taylor off to OLB paired up with Porter. On paper it looks nasty, I feel our defense is going to surprise some people next year.

I agree, it's his first time back and recovering from injury. Look for him to play but expect more outta him next year.... once he is in football shape then we will get a better evaluation of his performance

Merling will be fine....

He has plenty of speed, guys. He came to Clemson as a TE. Review the clips of him running down RB's on running plays. For anyone to say he is slow based on one day in minicamp when he is coming off surgery is comical. That will look silly when the season rolls around. Trust me, I've been watching Merling for 3 years now.

Good to hear, I never saw him play but read up on him and he sounds like a real baller so we'll see

Exactly. Good post.

I would think (or I guess I should say, I would hope) that we dont judge the guy on one mini camp practice. Though Im sure someone will start the first 'Merling is a Bust' post any second now. But come on. I dont judge linemen in practices with no pads. Period. Plus, I read another report that said he looked good. Its totally subjective.

What? Rookies don't pick up NFL speed within 5 minutes of their first practice? that's bonkers.

I had an umbilical hernia fixed about a year and a half ago and it takes a while to get back to normal where you don't think about it, even though it has "healed". What I am most afraid of is that he will push himself too hard now, tear things loose and end up missing time during the season. Be patient young grasshoppers! The man was a beast at Clemson and put a lot of pressure on my Seminoles when they played. I am very excited to have him on our side.

we dont' need to get too excited until september rolls around.

than we need most of our guys to be sitting good.

patience is the key as mentioned before. the wait is killing me though.

I wanted us to take a CB or Wr with our 2nd pick, but when Merrling dropped he was the best player avaiable at our pick! Finally the Dolphins are starting to make smart personal moves! The last couple of years , most of the posters on this board could have made better personal choices than the ones the previous magagment made !

Thought you guys might like this....
