Seems to think success connecting deep isn't just about the QB:
“I wouldn’t just say he struggles with the deep ball,” Philbin said. “We’ve got to cut down on our sacks. It’s easy to say ‘we’re going to throw the ball deep, attack the field vertically down field.’ But there’s a few things you need to get that done and the first thing is protection.”

He also goes on to talk about Running Backs:
“I’m certainly not opposed to a quote-unquote power running back, but he has to fit overall with the team and be able to contribute in different ways as well,” Philbin said. “He has to do something on special teams, help us in other areas. He has to be able to pass protect. He has to be a viable threat in the passing game.”

I must say this doesn't, really jive with some people's adamant view that we are: A.) a power running team, and B.) 100% most definitely going to draft Gurley or Gordon

However, since most people here think Philbin is a moron, I expect the majority of people here to completely dismiss anything has to say.

I do not think he's a moron - I think he's a corpse!

His struggles deep have been overstated by the haters to try to justify moving on. He hasn't had time in the pocket to develop a sense of timing with his deep balls. His rookie year was probably the best o line he had and his deep balls were tops of the league that year. This guy has a cannon and i don't see a problem with the deep ball that can't be fixed.

“I still think there’s a future for Dallas Thomas, without a doubt,” Philbin said

I agree he has a future, I'm just not sure it's in the NFL

Its a smart way to answer the question. He didn't say as a starter.

Lol the power running back has to help on special teams. Ok Joe. Lets get Todd Gurley to be the holder

I think you pretty much missed the entire point and subtext of the quote, which is essentially, we are not looking for a premier power running back (Gurley). Could be a smokescreen but that's what he was saying.

I don't think he's a moron . I think hes going to prove a lot of people wrong this year . But hey , I'll be the idiot until around December . Then we can get back to this

so glad he understands it all starts with protection...something tannehill has been moved off the spot plenty of as a result of it being poor...coverage and protection dictate vertical shots opportunities

Yeap , people want a deep ball when the guards are getting pushed back into his pocket and getting ran over .... You need to be able to step into a deep throw ... You can't just stand flat footed

I'm sorry, people can buy into the protection thing all they want, but they need to go and watch the games. Sure, our pass protection isn't stupendous, but there were a number of times RT went to throw deep and had time to do so and the passes were horrible. Underthrown. Overthrown. Off the mark. Lasers with no air under them.

I've become a believer in Tannehill over the last season, but if you can't see with your own eyes that he doesn't have a good feel for throwing deep you are wearing aqua and orange blinders. That doesn't make him bad, either. It's just something he needs to get better at.

no doubt there was some bad throws he had time also on...almost all to wallace and i doubt he will be right in sync with kenny stills also given the similar game and skillset and not large catch radius or room for error but the dolphins would have taken more shots vertical if they trusted the protection or it held up more...not that they just scrapped it from the playbook like some would imply cause of the qb...that doesnt add up with what you see on the tape

miami wanted to take more shots vertical off pa with the 7 step drops etc while routes developed down the field but the qb was moved off the spot or unable to finish his drop even plenty...thus the dump it down etc

There were a few factors that went into the problems connecting deep. The QB is definitely one of them but not the only one.
