[h=1]Miami Dolphins new coach Adam Gase will run the offense that best suits his personnel, despite the catcalls for more deep throws.
When asked about an offense that throughout training camp has been a series of mostly dump-offs, screens, and short-to-intermediate routes, Gase was adamant that he's comfortable with an offense that exploits the horizontal aspect of the field more than the vertical.

"I'm fine with it. I'm the one scripting the plays, calling the plays," he said Wednesday, per the Miami Herald. "I've had a little success with what we do. There's a time and a place. There's also a time and a place not to get sacked 60 times in a year, too."
With questions on the offensive line, a quarterback in Ryan Tannehill who doesn't own the most precise deep ball and superior intermediate route runners in Jarvis Landry and DeVante Parker, it's logical Gase would stick with the shorter passing game.

He's right. The stats prove it. Everyone loves the deep ball but it's actually being done less and less these days. DEs are getting better so there's less time for that kind of play to unfold.

This is more Gase playing to Tannehills strengths than a overall statement about the league in my opinion

You have to have the deep threat, or "dink and dunk" doesn't work. Just look at what happened two years ago when we started to do "dink and dunk" under Lazor because we had no OL. It worked for a few games...and then the coverage compressed the field and shut it down!

I hate this style of offense. I hated Philbin for wanting it, and I hate Gase for wanting it. Miami will go nowhere as long as they keep running this stupid college-style "finesse" garbage. Football is a tough, physical sport, so your team should play tough and physical. Under Philbin, Miami's offense struggled against physical defenses (especially the d-lines of the AFC East). Brady and the Pats (who like to use short passes) may have won a few games here and there, but when it mattered they were shut down by tough defenses. Does no one else see this?

Sparano's team was far more physical than any team under Philbin. Tony's team could go toe-to-toe with Elite teams; the problem was that they couldn't score enough points due to a lack of talented offensive playmakers (QB, RB, WE, and TE) as Ireland pretty much refused to draft these positions in the early rounds. Under Philbin, the team finally had a few talented players at these positions, but still lost. Why? Because Philbin changed the team into a short pass based offense, refused to establish a running game, neutered the o-line by getting rid of good blockers and replacing them with linemen who could do his style of blocking, and got rid of defensive talent. Last year's team went 1-5 in the Division. Pitiful... all because Philbin's style of offense is useless against tough defenses and his o-line couldn't block a troop of Girl Scouts.

Now? Gase wants to run the same style of offense behind most of the same non-blocking linemen. Sparano's team was a lot closer to being a playoff team than any team fielded by Philbin. Remember Philbin needing a win against either the Jets or the Bills to earn a playoff berth? How did his team do? They choked twice and scored a total of 10 points in those two games. Gee... if I recall correctly, Sparano's teams had much more success in the Division than Philbin's teams. Easiest route to the playoffs? Win your Division. But, as long as Miami keeps running this same old lame, pathetic offense they will never sniff the post-season.

not all offenses are created the same. It very well could look similar to last years offense, but don't underestimate believing in a system and the coaches running it vs hating coaches and giving up. Last years offense could work brilliantly at times, unforatuntely injuries and crap coaches and players giving up caught up with us and a 1-3 hole is tough to dig out of .

Don't mistake Philbin's offense for one Case will run. Ever.

We have Kenny Stills & Devante Parker as our outside WRs, and we're still going to play dink & dunk?

Are we or are we going to take our shots at opportune times? I swear!

Devante Parker averaged nearly 20 yds/catch.

Rather than crawling down the field in a phone booth, I would like to see us take more shots downfield with him.

Geez, the football immaturity here is nuts. Dunk and dunk is a smart way to play football. 5-8 yards per play, be effective, give your defense a rest, and come the fourth quarter their defense is worn down. Long passes are sexy, they make highlight reels, and they are occasionally needed but they are low percentage and stupid. There is nothing finesse about dink and dunk- it's just a way to execute a game plan. Hell, it is the way football naturally is by nature. It just makes sense to plan for that.

Ok. But, the first time I see a screen pass 5 yards behind the line of scrimmage on 3rd and 9 I will immediately go into "Fire Gase" mode. And, if I ever see multiple receivers and they all run routes short of the sticks on 3rd and long I will begin looking forward to the next season with hopefully a new Head Coach and offense!

The dink and dunk has worked out pretty well for the Patriots. This isn't the 1970's Al Davis Raiders. Your dink and dunk, ball control passing offense, when sustained, keeps the balance of offense and defense symbiosis. Any way offensive drives are sustained benefits the defense by keeping them off the field and limiting the mistakes that are made is a benefit to the team.
