DAUNTE UPDATE

The Vikings spent much today on the phones, finalizing a deal for quarterback Daunte Culpepper.
As of 7 p.m. ET, it was difficult to pinpoint where Culpepper is headed.
But it's not difficult to pinpoint where he's not.

A Sunshine State native, Daunte Culpepper starred at the University of Central Florida. He's not being traded to New Orleans. A Saints official said the team is not in the running for Culpepper, and New Orleans will push hard for Brees.
A Raiders official said Oakland never made an offer to Minnesota, even though the two sides spoke. The Raiders official said the team is absolutely out of the Culpepper sweepstakes.
The Baltimore Ravens are not interested in Culpepper, and likely will be pursuing Kerry Collins.
Late today, a Jets official confirmed his team won't pursue Culpepper.
Unless some team is lying -- and the teams mentioned above were adamant in their responses -- that leaves the Miami Dolphins as the only team that has admitted to being in the market for a quarterback.
Culpepper probably would be thrilled at the idea of returning home to Florida. He would be happy, the Dolphins likely would be happy, and the Vikings would be happy.
Now we wait to see if this bit of sense makes reality.

I hope you're right if it doesn't cost us a 2nd.

Can't believe will pass on Brees for Daunte. I don't like him at all but if Saban thinks his our guy, I will have to accept him.
GO BREES!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i DONT understand, WHY Would we want Culpepper?? Arent we supposed to be looking for a FRANCHISE QB??? Culpepper is entering his 8th? year...now yes, i suppose we could keep Culpepper to a 3-4 year deal and draft someone like Charlie Whitehurst in the 3rd round to groom behind him, but still...Daunte isnt much of a scrambler, we need a QB who can run around the field when being chased by defensive players...Daunte doesnt do that plus hes big, plus he has knee? problems. I dont know, but id rather Patrick Ramsey, OR better...Matt Schaub.

We can't go wrong as long as we end up with one of them. I hope it happens soon because I'm losing my mind going back and forth....

PHINZ RULE!!!

One of the million articles from yesterday said that a Dolphins official denied having any offer for Culpepper, but they had discussed it. Sounds just like everyone else. These reports are out of control.

First off let me say that, basically everyone who came in to visit the Dolphins last year during the off-season, was signed...except for Matt Stewart. Then again, Saban is deceptive, he likes to make people think we are going for one guy, but really be focusing on another.

Have you ever seen Culpepper play? There are people on this board complaining because they don't want a Michael Vick type QB and you think he can't scramble. Culpepper is the prototypical NFL quarterback. He is big, strong, accurate, and can run like the wind. You say he can't run and because of that you would rather have Patrick Ramsey. Are you serious? Ramsey is a statue. Culpepper is only 29 years old and is beginning, what should be, the prime years of his career. Other than those reasons, I don't understand why the Dolphins would be interested either.

Is anybody else excited that we may be getting a franchise QB in either Brees or DC but just feel that the concerns with the injuries takes away from the excitement?

All I know is if we get either if the above, we better get a 2nd stringer with starting experience.

Get Gus to restructure his contract (for back-up money).

Nice thought, that would work for me. He is probably our best insurance if we get Brees or DC because he alread knows our system. But will he do it?

I don't care which one it is, Drew Brees or Duante Culpepper. Just give me a better QB, an upgrade over what we have right now and I'll be happy. And I don't mean a Josh McCown or Ramsey either. I'm sick of second tier guys and back ups. We have a great franchise, a great owner, a great coach and coaching staff, not to mention great, devoted fans. We are becoming a top tier team, a playoff caliber team, so we need a top tier QB to take us to where we got to go. Enough is enough, I want to win!!!!!!!!!

If we signed a top FA QB, Gus would have to start weighing his options. If he wasn't willing to re-sign at a lower amount, we'd probably just cut him. He probably wouldn't have too many other teams beating his door down for his services (St. louis would probably like to have him, at a back-ups price). I'm not sure he'd want to move again to another city (he has a family) just to be another teams back-up.

To begin with I am going to be sad if we don't get Brees as well. But I trust Saban and feel if we overpay for a qb that could possibly be damaged goods could put us in a horrible situation. If we don't get brees that will be the reason IMO.
As for Culpepper not being a scrambler, I have to disagree. He has rushed for over 406 yards a year EVERY year he has been the starter, except for last year when he got hurt. His problem is he sometimes rushes too much and OFTEN fumbles b/c his hands are too small. I feel Dante was a product of Scott Linhan's system and benifited from having a moss where he could get away with lobbing a deep ball up into double coverage if nothing else was open. But again I trust Nick and if he will have done the due diligence. He probally still has a great relationship with SL and can get his opinioin about whether Dante could become what we need.
Another problem I have with Dante is his lack of leadership qualities. Maybe Nick can be the head and not need Dante to be a leader but I would rather have a Josh McGown or Ramsey. We have to have someone, and it will be fun to see who it is. I will support whoever it is, even if it isn't Brees :boohoo:
