In a string of tweets on Thursday afternoon, running back Adrian Peterson made it clear what he wants from the Minnesota Vikings: guaranteed money in his contract.

Peterson unleashed 11 tweets on Thursday afternoon venting about the leverage the Vikings have over the former NFL MVP and arguing he should get some protection against the possibility the team eventually will release him with money remaining on his deal.

"I know hundreds of player's that wished their team would've HONORED the contract! But instead got threw to the side like trash," Peterson tweeted. "A lill crazy how one side has so much power that they can do as they please when it come to the contract! But when the other-side (player's) Feels for whatever reason! Family, Change of scenery or simply - what they feels just might work best for them! Those same laws don't apply!"

But NFL contracts are indeed one-sided, unless they’re individually negotiated to be two-sided. If Peterson wanted in 2011 to ensure that his contract would be two-sided through its final year of 2017, he could have — by insisting on the contract being fully guaranteed for its full duration. When NFL contracts aren’t fully guaranteed, the team can insist on the player honoring every game of every season while in turn having the power to tear up the deal whenever the team wants.

That’s just the way it is, and that system was reiterated via the Collective Bargaining Agreement ratified by the players only weeks before Peterson signed his latest deal.

If Peterson is really taking a principled stand about all parties honoring their deals perhaps he will consider paying back all the money the Vikings gave him while he sat on his couch this past season. I have a sneaking suspicion he would disagree.

I wonder what he would do if his kid threw that kind of tantrum...

He has a point, but he's not positioning himself to be the player to try and take more power for the NFL players.

It's my understanding he played one game last year and the Vikings paid him his salary. He just looks like a hypocrite because of that.

Peterson later clarified his tweets, saying, "This is nothing against the Vikings. I am just frustrated that our union did not get guaranteed contracts for its players." And a source close to Peterson said, "Adrian sees this issue as bigger than him. He truly believes that football players should have more protection with truly guaranteed contracts. It is easier to be quiet and not take the hatred from many people. However, that is not in his DNA."

What a stand up guy. Its not about his own situation, its about all the other players! Hes just the martyr for this cause. Oddly, i dont recall him martyring himself during the CBA negotiations nor when he signed his record breaking deal. How bizarre.

Florio, of all people, summed it up nicely:

Peterson believes he has in some way been wronged, by someone, over the past nine months. Still, a shotgun attack on a system that has made him a very rich man and that has the Vikings ready to pay a 30-year-old running back $12.75 million this year makes little sense.

Four years ago, he could have insisted on a fully-guaranteed contract. Or he could have insisted on a shorter-term deal, which would have allowed him to get a fresh start elsewhere. Instead, with full awareness of a system that was reiterated by a Collective Bargaining Agreement signed not long before he signed his latest contract, Peterson made a seven-year commitment, knowing that the commitment would only go both ways as long as his employer wanted it to.

Peterson made that commitment after comparing pro football to “modern-day slavery.” So he went in with eyes and ears open as to what the NFL is (or as to what he thinks it is), he signed a long-term contract, he willingly and voluntarily took a $12 million signing bonus, he earned more than $35 million over four years at a position that has become largely interchangeable in recent seasons, and he’ll get another $12.75 million this year by simply showing up for work.

It’s unclear whether Peterson is willing to not play this year or to retire if the Vikings don’t guarantee his contract beyond 2015 or if they won’t trade him. It’s possible he simply needed to vent, as he makes his way from anger to bargaining then denial, depression, and finally acceptance.

Regardless, he’s not going to find much sympathy here, or pretty much anywhere.

I wonder what he would do if his kid threw that kind of tantrum...

Didn't he attack one of his victim because the child played rough with his brother when trying to join a game?

The irony of this entire situation is so thick you could cut it with a knife. Or hit it with a switch at least.

Now if you'll excuse me, i have to go reread the complaint about one side having all the power over the other from an adult who beats children.

he's just spitting this all out now because he is i this situation. i doubt he ever backed up other players contracts before and such with their situations. he just isnt happy, and now will make a stink.

Minnesota is an organization, a business that is run not for Adrian Peterson... Adrian Peterson is a pad employee by them, and yes he has brought greatness t othe team. but now also has brought some shame, as well as issues now too!!!

all in all... the team should have more power over the employee... just like anywhere. stop whining.. play the game, or sit out. you have the choice AP. none of this probably would be problems if you didnt beat the kid too... just saying!!!

All true. I'm sure his peers don't appreciate his timing to discuss this subject.
