NFL free agency is set to start in two weeks, and the Miami Dolphins' best defensive lineman -- Paul Soliai -- is close to hitting the open market.

But Soliai's agent, David Canter, told ESPN's Josina Anderson Wednesday that Miami can still make a last-minute push to keep the 2011-12 Pro Bowler.
"Paul's situation is unique, but they know where we stand. We're optimistic that they will make a big push for him. However, I don't think they can keep him if they don't offer him a long-term deal, but they know that. Miami has a chance to re-sign him if they get aggressive and give him the deal that they know we will

We dont plan to run a base 3-4 anymore and the times we do we can have Starks fill in. In addition, Soliai is a 2 down player. Why pay this guy up the *** when we can get a guy like Mario Williams for the same price.

Final Answer: NO, we have other priorities.

Soliai's time is up in Miami. I would like to keep him, but he just doesn't fit what Miami wants to do defensively. Miami has enough DL depth where we can easily find two guys that can be the interior DT's in a base 4-3.

I'd like to keep him for a reasonable cost, but I'd disagree with the description of him being our "best defensive lineman." IMO its Randy.

Soliai has finally come into his own as a 3/4 NT. He'll expect to get paid as such. The problem is that Soliai fits into a 4/3 D better than Langford, who is also a FA... He will get the price he wants with the skill set he has... We won't bring him back, but not because of the "he doesn't fit" or "isn't the best DL we have" crowd, but because he can get more than we will be willing to or can afford to pay him elsewhere... He'll go somewhere and become a stalwart on some 3/4 D... Too bad...we will be losing our best DL...

Soliai, Langford, Ike Alama-Francis and Merling are FAs...just how much depth do we really have ??

Soliai is going for the money. Ireland will wisely let him walk.

Teams should keep players they develope if you can, Solia should have been extended a couple years ago. Guys that size with that much power and speed are rare. Solia could be a huge weapon as a penetrating DT he is quick and could really disrupt and penetrate up the middle.

The pats didn't let Wilfork go when he was a FA and we shouldn't let Solia go if we can work something out.

it's not about his size, speed or skill set for me, he has always had those things. the question is about desire and motivation.
he still hasn't put a full season of high-level play together and only looked good when playing for a contract.
imo, if he would have shown anything at all in his first 3 seasons, they never would have taken Odrick in 2010.

There is no way that you could get Williams for what Soliai will be paid. Not even close.

I certainly hope they re-sign Soliai. With Soliai, you stand a real good chance of having as good a defense in 2012 as you did in 2011. Without Soliai, I think you're moving downward. That's my opinion.

True, but it depends on how much he wants. Can we afford him along with Manning/Flynn if that is the plan?

For Comparison Purposes:

Haloti Ngata
got $60 Million over 5 years ($12.2 Million per year)

Demarcus Ware got $78 Million over 6 years ($13 Million per year)

Jared Allen got $73 Million over 6 years ($12 Million per year)

Soliai THINKS he should be paid like a high end NT around what Ngata got. (Rumors are Dallas will pay him $10+ Million)

Mario Williams will want to be paid like a high end DE around what Ware and Allen got.

Those two salaries are pretty damn close. So for you to say that its not even close is pretty ridiculous. A simple google search could have shown you that.
