With two of his disciples roaming the sidelines in the same division, Parcells is sure to take some satisfaction in knowing that he is causing his fair share of sleepless nights in New England, Buffalo and New York/New Jersey.
Patriots Head Coach Bill Belichick was on Parcells' coaching staff with the New York Giants, the Jets and again in New England before Parcells left to take over the New York Jets, and even though Parcells won't be on the sidelines, his presence is still strongly felt.
"I hate to see that because I have so much respect for Bill and his evaluation of personnel and his ability to put together an organization," Belichick said. "I've seen that on a number of different levels, whether it be New York, New England, the Jets and most recently in Dallas even though I wasn't a part of that organization as I was the other three. I know Bill will do a great job of rebuilding and strengthening the organization on every level. I think he's already done that and so competitively that's not what I like to see."
New York Jets Head Coach Eric Mangini considers himself indebted to Parcells for giving him a chance to break into the coaching ranks, so when he speaks about Parcells he uses a very reverent tone.
"Bill's a guy who's had a big influence on me and he was great last year in terms of being able to ask him questions and get advice," said Mangini, heading into his third year as an NFL head coach. "I think he's got tremendous knowledge of all different facets. He's good and his impact will be felt immediately. There's a lot of familiarity in this division and we were all together in 1997, '98 and '99 with Belichick as defensive coordinator, Parcells as head coach and I was the defensive assistant, so we're a pretty familiar group."
Bills Head Coach Dick Jauron does not have a direct connection to Parcells, but after watching his team pull out a close 13-10 victory over the Dolphins in Miami last year, he expect to be in for an even tougher battle this season with Parcells in charge of football operations.
"Unfortunately, he's proven himself to be a winner wherever he's been and so you don't like to see him in your division, and that's the truth," Jauron said. "The flip side of that is we're all so competitive in this game that it's a great challenge. It's a great challenge to us particularly because we haven't done very well in the division, so for us to pick up our game and to try to keep moving forward and be a challenger is the task."
