I believe Miami has had a fantastic offseason, but you always have to compare where the other teams are in your division. Other teams have made some good moves as well. Here is a look at how the Dolphins rank, position by position, with the rest of the AFC East.

Now I know this is coming from a Dolphins fan and some of the rankings are certainly debatable. QB is one, but I really think Miami has more talent at the position than the Jets. I also think the Dolphins offensive line could move up in time. It's a young unit, though. Special teams is really a projection based on how many players the Dolphins have brought in to upgrade that area. But, all in all, I think Miami has at least closed some ground with the Jets. Brady is just entering his prime so catching NE is going to take time and a few more great offseasons. Buffalo is building nicely. The AFC East is really still a one team race, I believe, with Buffalo having a shot at wildcard.

What exactly are these rankings based on? We haven't played a game yet. I also think the Dolphins are more talented then the Bills.

This is all on paper, so on paper where is Miami better?

Jason Taylor, C, and TE is all I can think of.

If I were to make a ranking I would rank the positions on this team and let everything sort itself out later-

Position/last year grade /projection for this year
QB- INCOMPLETE/C
RB A/ A
OL C/B
WR D/C+
TE D/B

Offensive GPA last year 1.6 (D+)
Projection this year 2.4 (C)

DL F/C
LB C/B
CB B/B+
S C/B+

Defensive GPA last year 1.75 (D+)
Projection this year 2.75 (C+)

i dont know why you put buffallo last they had a top 3 best special teams last year

Well these rankings are interesting. We haven't played a game yet but what else is there to talk about during the offseason ?

There's no way the Jets are 4th in QBs, Chad had a bad year but it was his first bad year when healthy. Edwards, Beck and Clemens are all in the same boat right now but Chad has been a very succesful QB in this league. I'd rtae the Jets 2nd in QBs.

WRs we'd be 2nd as well. Coles & Cotch are one of the best duos in the league, we may not be as deep at WR as Buffalo but the top 2 give us 2nd behind NE.

I'm not sure about the OL yet.

Our LBs are very good, David Harris may be the best LB in the division. We signed Pace and drafted Gholston to go along w/ Thomas & barton. We may be behind NE but nobody else in the division.

I don't know how Miami jumps ahead in STs when they were the worst in the division a year ago. I think we'll take a hit losing Westhoff but our STs will still be very good.

These rankings can be fun, but I can't see how we could be ahead of many teams at the QB position. At least noodle arm Pennington and Clemons have some experience and old noodle arm has had a lot more success than our most proven QB (McCown). Hopefully are new talent at OL gets us up that list a bit but it's probably about right for now, although Buffalo's line isn't bad. I think a strong running game, while the team is learning what will be a new passing game, will be the key to Miami's success. The potential is there for us to play CRAM ball with the 2 big backs and solid talent up front but if the passing game is super inept it still may be tough. I think the biggest thing Miami needs to do, and I'm sure I'll ghet plenty of disagreement here, is settle the QB position early on in camp. A long drawn out competition will only hurt team chemistry. I also think all Dolphins fans should just be rooting for one of our 3 QB's to just be clearly better than the other 2, regardless of THERE NAME. I know that will be tough for some folks but that is the best thing for the team. If it is close, the staff should just go with the guy with the most potential and stick with them. The key is too improve at QB it shouldn't matter if it's Beck, Henne or McCown, being RIGHT about it shouldn't be a factor as none of us are out of work NFL GM's.

I do agree with the original poster that the AFC East is still a one team race, but let's not let NE smell 19-0 this year. Boy do I hate them.

These rankings are all just on paper, from the players each team has at each position.
I also think its a little redicilous to be ranking teams by position when one freakin game has been played yet, but what the he11 ... i'll give it a shot.

Jason Taylor, C, and TE is all I can think of.

Miami's loses to injury last year were to star players and Buffalo's injuries weren't . Buffalo had 7 wins but 4 of those 7 wins were to the Jets and Dolphins. Last year in Miami we beat the Bills in every aspect of the game except the final score. Just because the Bills won that game doesn't mean they should have.

I also look at the fact that Miami's injuries were to Ronnie Brown, Trent Green, Zach Thomas, Yeremiah Bell and Chris Chambers due to trade. None of those players were in either game against the Bills last year.
I think that's a huge advantage for the Bills yet we still outplayed the Bills in Miami. Those are probably our best players and the Bills didn't lose one player equal to any of those players as far as talent and or contribution to the NFL.

You also need to take into account the amount of change to the Dolphins the last 5 years, we've had large turnovers to the coaching staff and FO much of the last 5 years. That has a large effect to the core talent of the team due to system and philosophy changes.

With that said, Miami was still able to finish the season better on both sides of the ball then the Bills for the second year in a row. With all our issues in coaching, our very poor ST play and injuries we still managed to have better statistics as a 1-15 team then the Bills did as a 7-9 team. Buffalo also finished the 2007 season with the exact same statistics they did the year before, wins and loses, offensive and defensive ranking.

That's how I see things with Buffalo. Till the teams play all we can do is speculate. As far as I can tell, I don't know how anyone can look at the two teams and say the Bills are better off based on wins alone. Buffalo has not improved in the last two years. No one will look at the Bills over the last two years and think they could have been a playoff team. You can't look at their statistics or talent and come up with a good argument in favor of the Bills being a playoff team.

Both teams will be different in 08, especially Miami. So we'll just have to wait and see. Now if the Bills become a playoff team that will be a different story, but they have had the same chance as everyone else and they have yet to do anything with that chance. I think the biggest difference in Buffalo and Miami the last two years is luck. It has to be considering how bad Buffalo was on both sides of the ball. Miami was better then Buffalo the last two years. Buffalo could easily have been 2-14 as they were 7-9, you should consider yourself luckier not better.

I think the Jets will be the 2nd best team in the division. I like the additions the Jets have made. They still have to prove they were the right additions, but based on potential, I like the Jets moves.

I can't fault you for not knowing the other teams in the division as well as the Dolphins. The Jets and Pats are sexier than the Bills therefore Buffalo would get the least coverage and be the less well known to you.

Buffalo has had a top 5 special teams squad since April became coach. Twice the top unit in the league.

Buffalo has a decent O line that is in it's 2nd year playing together, the only week link being centre. I believe this year the Bills O line will be around par with the Pats and Jets lines. There will be little difference in that area between those teams.

I can't say much about Miami's O line or Special teams because I don't know enough about those positions on your team, so I will have to do a little more reading up before I can make an opinion.

I do know that the Dolphins will be improved in all areas this year and barring injuries could take 3 games in the division.
