Rookie
Walt Aikens brought some versatility to the Dolphins secondary after being selected in the fourth round of the 2014 NFL draft, and it’s being put to use.
Aikens played cornerback at Liberty University but has been playing safety for the Dolphins this season; that was until
Jamar Taylor sustained a shoulder injury in the second half of the game against Denver last Sunday and Aikens returned to his last college position.
With Taylor already ruled out of the game against the New York Jets on Monday night and with veteran
Cortland Finnegan a question mark because of an ankle injury, Aikens could find himself getting more work at cornerback this week.
Aikens is among a group of players in contention for playing time at cornerback, the others being newly signed
R.J. Stanford and
Don Jones and maybe even perhaps safety and nickel corner
Jimmy Wilson.
“Right now we’re all fighting for that spot,” Aikens said before quickly adding, “not necessarily fighting. We’re just trying to do whatever we can to help the team. We’re staying ready and if Coach calls on us, then we’ll be at that position and able to handle everything they throw at us.”
Aikens, who played safety at the University of Illinois before transferring to Liberty, actually began getting practice time at different spots in the secondary after Finnegan was injured in the Nov. 9 game at Detroit.
