I'd take him over Crosby right now. This is an outstanding rookie class of Ovechkin, Crosby, & Svatos. It's too bad they aren't televised more.
Best rookie class in years...perhaps ever.
Ovechkin, Crosby, Svatos, Prucha, Carter, Richards, Vanek, Boyes, Jokinen, Steen, Wellwood among others at forward.
Phaneuf, Ballard, Meszaros (perhaps the most underrated of the bunch), Seabrook, Suter among others on defense.
Lundqvist, Miller, Nittymaki, Lehtonen in goal...
The lockout really helped this whole group. Gave most of them a chance to play an extra year of junior, play a year in the minors or play overseas.
In fairness to other rookie classes this is basically 2 years in one. A lot of these guys would have played last year without the lockout.
Next year is already really shaping up as well. Evgeni Malkin, Alexander Semin, Anze Kopitar, Marc Staal, Luc Bourdon, Wojtek Wolski and Gilbert Brule are all the kids to start looking at now.
I won't get into the Crsoby vs. Ovechkin debate. Ovechkin is doing more with a LITTLE less. Remember, the Penguins are riddled with injuries. This is the not the Penguin team a lot of people thought they would see this year. Ovechkin played in the Russian Elite League last year and has essentially been playing against men for 3 years while Crosby has been in junior playing against 16-19 year olds. Ovechkin is also 2 years older.
In the end I think they will both be dominant forces in the NHL for 10+ years...
To be honest though, I'll take Dion Phaneuf over all of them. Rookie defensman are not supposed to be doing the things he is doing. The guy is a ROCK. I'd call him Scott Stevens but Stevens had more of an edge but not nearly the offensive skill. Very comparable players though.
