Maybe because he was hired only after Mike Shanahan and Bob Stoops turned down the job, Ron Zook took shots from all sides. Even some Gators fans wanted him to fail.

"I fought negative recruiting before I landed in Gainesville," Zook said. "There was FireRonZook.com. And I took it. But I always knew where it was coming from.

Zook actually does know where it's coming from this time. Or he thinks he does.

He won't publicly name the school, but it might be located 90 miles east of Chicago. The one where Rockne coached.

Notre Dame?

"I'm not going to say that," Zook said. "I'm not going to name names and point fingers. It's over."

Zook came to Chicago on Thursday for a one-day media tour. He did Mike North's WSCR-AM morning show, met with various news crews and print reporters and appeared on Comcast SportsNet's "Chicago Tribune Live."

The day was arranged before he met G. Gordon Liddy, ordered the Watergate break-in or fed his dog, Checkers.

"I don't like to be compared to Richard Nixon," he said.

 I think the whole thing is pretty hilarious

He negative recruits ND all the time, Weis alluded to it earlier in the year when Benn was suddenly changing his mind about ND. Zook is a used car salesman, he sells these kids a pile of **** but somehow is able to convince them it's a diamond. I hope the entire programs enjoys 3 wins next year.

I cant wait for recruiting next year, we're pushing hard in Illinois already

I dont really understand why ND is getting the blame here. NW coaches, John L Smith and other Big Ten coaches are the ones on record wondering what's going on down there. Why are people assuming ND is the one complaining the most? I dont doubt we've said stuff to recruits, but I guarantee Zook wasnt on Weis' radar until Benn switched.

Fired Michigan State coach John L. Smith questioned how a school whose team went 4-19 over the last two seasons could attract such a top-notch class, telling the newspaper: "If they had a winning program and all of that, it would be a different deal. If they had the greatest facilities in the world, then maybe they could sell them. But what are they selling?

"Where there's smoke, there's probably fire," added Smith, whose Spartans were the Illini's only Big Ten victim this season.

Northwestern even entered the fray, with Wildcats receivers coach Kevin Johns telling the New York Times: "We're recruiting two different types of character, two different types of kids. They can get in almost any kid that they want. We have to go through academic admissions."

Ron Zook is a great recruiter and all teams negative recruit even Notre Dame, Florida, USC, and anyone else. These coaches need great players and their jobs are on the line.

Haha like Notre Dame doesnt recruit negatively....right. Fat boy is just having sour grapes after losing Wilson and Benn to Illinois. And Illinois will win more than 3 games next year, actually I think they could beat ND if they were to play eachother next year.

What is "negative recruiting"?
Something like this:
"Do you really want to play for a coach who lies to the public? Would you really be able to trust Nick Saban with your son's future? Do you trust him to be there for the next four years? Do you trust the things he's told you so far?"

nothing wrong with that imo....

I'm not going to call foul on Zook. Sure Champaign has a POS football facility, but all these kids are garunteed to get immediate PT.

Benn shouldn't be too much of a surprise because his best friend is Vontae Davis (CB at Illinois). Wilson is also friends with Benn, but he didn't go to Michigan or Notre Dame because they both wanted him to bulk up (he's a 220 pound DE, that Zook will allow to play LB).

Now had they got Marvin Austin then I'd call foul; Tez and Benn are good prospects, but Austin is on an entirely different level. He chose UNC for 2 reasons 1)Butch Davis 2)He wants to be a journalist and UNC has a geat program (I kid you not, words right out of his mouth).

Anyways, had it not been for the fact that Benn is from DC, it wouldn't be an issue. Illinois can compete with ND for in-state recruits (mainly because ND goes more national)

Ideally you should be selling your school, not saying why another school sucks

right. but isnt selling your school, the same thing as telling why your school and football program is better?

"well the Auburn football program is better then the Alabama football program because we dont have a man running the Auburn program that has turned his back on 2 teams in the past 3 years."

how exactly are you selling your school if your not saying why its better then another? i dont see a problem with this.

zook is a great recruiter, plays within the rules and is a man of character. These people saying horible things about zooker are just plain stupid and can not understand a great recruiter can get a great crop of players.

You know that the Illini offensive coordinator is from D.C. right? He is very well respected in the Washington D.C. area (former Maryland assistant).

Also, the Illini have good facilities. They arent at the top of the Big Ten but they are good and impressive to recruits (as many of them have said).
