I keep hearing/reading that we need to draft a FS, but I think Clemons will be our guy. This guy has all the tools (speed and power), played in a good program, and was ultimately overshadowed by the guy next to him in the secondary (Michael Hamlin). I think Bell will be our SS and Clemons and Gerbil will compete for FS in camp...especially since Clemons was the starter by the end of the year when we played Pitts and he was the biggest standout in camp last year as well. Also we all know how much this front office thinks of their own picks.

I think we will keep Gerbil though for another year for three reasons...(1) This FO give players 2 years to make it happen (Wilford & Murphy come to mind right away) (2) we have already paid 30% of his front loaded contract (3) He is a great backup to Bell

I did not know why he did not start the last two games. I did like seeing him in the Pitt game in a bigger role, but if we were going to put anyone on the team in so we could "have game film" on them it needed to be Clemons. FS was our biggest hole, but they just let Wilson stink it up. I did not understand as I did not see Clemons get beet for a 60 yard TD in the two games he did start, as Wilson did so many times.

All that being said I do want to see Chris starting next year. I think ILB and FS are the two biggest holes going in to the off-season, and either a FA or 1st-2nd round pick needs to be spent on FS. Bell is the run stopper and our leading tackler so we need a ball hawking FS that can cause some turn overs/not drop easy INTs. Troy and Ed Reed shows you that FS is not to be overlooked, and if you really pay attention to this past season, even if we some where in the middle of Ed Reed and Gibril Wilson(best and worst starting FS in the NFL) we would have made the playoffs this year. Wilson's lack of ints, blown coverages, and 50+ yards plays allowed, are the reason we have to watch NY play this weekend, while our guys are hanging out at the pool.

In preseason I thought he would be starting by game 5-6.

I thought it was very clear that neither Wilson or Bell could cover deep.

I'm big on team and defensive speed and he has it. Plus he averaged 100 tackles a year for 3 years at Clemson.

Move Wilson to SS if we have to keep him.

like a popular michael jackson said u r not a alone

i am pulling for clemons big time.if he can handle it,and plays well.it will be a big boost to the team.one thing that gives me hope. nolan has worked with young players that have turned out to be great.nolan knows what it takes at the saftey position. i expect him to find someone to get the job done.

Wilson and his double digit missed tackles is not the answer at free safety yet Sparano continued to line up Wilson.
This I will never figure out
why Clemons was not given more playing time so we wouldn't have questions in the next draft regarding the free safety position.

I shouldn't be to surprised since Sparano did the same with Wake
The one game where Wake played 33 snaps or half a game against Tampa...He had 1 sack and 9 QB pressures ...how do you reward a player that was as dominant as Wake was in that game...you cut his playing time to an average of 11 defensive plays per game for the rest of the season!!!

In spite of Sparano,Wake was tied with Jason Taylor with 20
QB pressures each...only problem is it took JT 661 DEFENSIVE SNAPS MORE THAN WAKE TO EQUAL WAKE'S PRESSURE ON OPPOSING QBs.

If Will Allen didn't get injuried there is a great chance that we still wouldn't know what we had with Vonte

Starting Smith over Davis goes to show you that even Sparano and co. are lost sometimes just not as lost as previous regimes

I personally hope clemons is the starter next year and I do think we should draft a safety I'm just not so sure it should be FS. I would like to see us draft a SS to start preparing for bell's departure. I know bell hasnt been a starter very long and all but he's no spring chicken he's getting up there in age.

Great post...first time I read 1 of your posts and not end up with an idiotic gaze at the pink full moon in your sig...This truth worries me, and gives me hope for Nolan.

he very well might be the future for us at FS - but i don't know if he's ready yet. what i do know is that wilson isn't - and culver is at best a project - so we still need to draft one (early IMO) for at the very least some nice competition and depth at the position.

i think the future is wilson at ss, cleoms at fs put bell in a blitz package when you need to bring a safety at the line

I have not seen enough tape on Clemons. He performs well on special teams. He was only target 7 times, and he did make any meaningful play. I hope you are right, but I am in a wait and see mode.

I am big fan of Tony, Ireland, and Parcels, but you have a serious point here. I think the problem is Tony gives to much power to his coordinators. I am curious if that is related to Paul and Horning being Parcels's choices and not Sparano's choices.

Another guy I think got a raw deal was Charlie Anderson. He started his 2nd game of the season against Tampa, and had two sacks and two forced fumbles, but was rewarded by getting no playing time for the rest of the season.

You would have thought with how poor our defense was all season the coaching staff would have juggled the line up a lot more than they did. The one game they benched Porter was against Tampa and Anderson and Wake combined for 10 tackles 3 sacks and 2 forced fumbles. That was 1/3 of Porters' season in one game. It also motivated Porter to have his best game of the season the following week against the Panthers when he recorded two sacks. You have to wonder what could have happened if the coaching staff would have sent more messages to players like the did to Porter in the Tampa game. I guess that is why we just fired our DC.

Man, Clemons had nice stats coming out of college and I was excited about him. But he could not see the field enough this year. I hope this is because Tuna likes grooming players first, like feeding them and working them out to get more ready. I hope Clemons lives up to the expectations. That would be a really nice surprise.
