Ireland has a rep around here as if he was the worst GM to ever to step foot in Davie. Fact is, as sad as it may be, Ireland was the best GM the Dolphins have had in the past 15 years. He was better than Rick Spielman, Nick Saban, and Randy Mueler. Just compare the Ireland drafts to the previous GM drafts. Ireland looks like Ron Wolf by comparison. That being said, the bar was ABSURDLY low. Ireland proved to be mediocre at best as GM, thus all the 7-9 seasons. He wasn't great, but he also wasn't horrific. There is a very real possibility that Hickey will indeed underperform the mediocre Jeff Ireland.
Ireland was at least able to avoid total busts in the 1st round and could pick up starters in the later rounds. His major failings was spotting OL talent (other than 1st rounders) and the 2nd and 3rd rounds, which were disastrous. Other than that, his other major failing was his lack of people skills which turned several players off and didn't endear himself to the media.
I think some of you may be surprised to find that there can indeed be a step below from Ireland, and Hickey very well may be that.
