Amando's view on FA

Run defense didn't get worse because we signed Suh. It got worse because we've had 5 drafts of nothing but linemen and passing game talent to fill a spread offense. No other team in the league has a linebacking corps with less attention paid to it during the draft. And the only one we've picked was the biggest bust of the 2nd millenium. We've also drafted tons of corners that have all busted, since our FO has played the "beat Brady" game for the past 10 years.

I don't think the "one play away" mentality is even a thing in the NFL. It makes sense in the NBA where rosters are 12 men deep. Perhaps even in baseball where you have a 25 man roster. One man doesn't make the difference in the NFL. The only argument you can make is Tom Brady, but then you'd have to bring up Belichick and the Pats scoring defense as factors for why they won again.

It seems like a fairly intelligent approach to me. I think the good teams (Patriots, Packers, Steelers) use FA to patch holes and fill some depth spots. I think signing a DE, DT, LB and a couple of guards makes sense. Guys who could come in and start, but aren't considered high-profile guys who push you into Salary Cap hell.

I sort of understood the Suh signing because I think at the time, the Dolphins thought a player of Suh's caliber rarely, if ever, hits the open market and they wanted to pounce while they could. In a year or so, compared to what others might be getting, his contract might not look so bad.

I guess the question Dolphins brass must answer is quantity or quality? Do you sign Kevin Zeitler for $10 million plus a year, or sign Patrick Omameh and Chance Warmack for $10 million combined?

FA is not an exact science, but history shows me, especially when it comes to the Dolphins, is that the under-the-radar guys tend to work out a little better. Throwing big money at medicore players (Phillip Wheeler, Mario Williams, etc.) is where you get in trouble.

One thing seems clear, we're not going to be able to fill every hole this off season either. Two guards, two LB's, a DE plus a FS and a slot corner and when Stills leave then what? We'll need another speed WR too which bring us back to why did t-dumb used 3 picks on Carroo? smfh

Ozzy rules!!

Just think that if philly hadnt (likely) contacted us about tje trade last year we wouldnt even of had Kiko! Granted we might've drafted someone to man that spot.

I like the approach, but it does put more pressure on hitting with draft picks. That's the ultimate question for Miami. Can they consistently make good selections?

So, as to free agency Miami is probably looking for 2-3 "decent" starters and potentially more compensatory picks as well. It's the Patriots model.

Can't get over the fact that we could have two more middle round picks to add quality players and instead we've got a #4 WR.

That mere stupidity alone makes me hope they break the bank in FA.

I have no confidence in this team drafting well aside from the obvious picks (like Tunsil falling in our laps)

Awesome! Since we don't want to spend much on fat guys who just block and give high fives to the "playmakers", I know 3 guards we can get for really cheap...Turner, Thomas and Douglas are likely available at the vet minimum. We can then spend some extra cash on the guys who look good at the combine and have cool dance moves. Besides you never hear about the fat guys when the experts are talking fantasy football. That's how you win football games!

IMHO Any player should be motivated to go out and do the best that they possibly can, look at new england, other than Hightower who's their next best player? those guys are low salaried guys who are trying to support their family not their ego.

In FA the right way to go is to get guys that are trying to become stars. The player comes in with an attitude of giving 100% to his new team in an effort to look great and hopefully get rewarded with a bigger payday. When you give a guy massive money it's the rare player that doesn't take a deep breathe and says that's it, I made it, I'm rich. That mind set creates FA failures like Wheeler, Williams and the Mike Wallace's of the world. Bring in a hungry, ascending player who has a history of staying healthy and showing up to work ready to go. This type of player is harder to find than simply signing the big name and takes more research and overall effort, but if you look at the Pats their loaded with just these types of players. Look at what they got out of Welker, Hogan, Amendola, Bennett, Freeney and Ninkovich, funny how some of those guys played for the Dolphins. That said, it wouldn't upset me if we overspent for one of the top tier Guards.

I cannot believe Grier said free agency is a crap shoot. It should be easier than the draft. Makes me think he has no clue.

How dare you use reason and logic in this conversation

I will also add up until Gase Miami hasn't had a recent coaching staff that new how to use players to their strengths like New England does. So those players you listed probably would not have achieved much if they stayed in Miami

The article even states it is not Suh's fault. That the problem is that you can't sign one guy and expect him to fix the whole problem. There are 7 players up front and you can't afford even average at all 7 positions when one guy is averaging 19 million per season. I don't care how good Suh is, you still need to be able afford human beings with something that resembles a pulse around him. Its not Suh's fault that Miami thought he alone would fix the deficiencies of every player up front.
