The mother of Phoenix Suns star Amare Stoudemire was sentenced Friday to three years in prison in a drunken driving case.


Carrie Mae Stoudemire, who appeared in court wearing a black-and-white prison uniform and donning blond dreadlocks, was arrested in October after crashing into a barricade on Interstate 10.


Amare Stoudemire, a power forward with the Suns, has been out for all but three games this season because of a knee injury. He was not in court Friday.

Carrie Mae Stoudemire was charged with two counts of aggravated DUI. At the time, the 50-year-old woman was on probation for two previous counts of aggravated DUI from a 2003 case in Phoenix.

She entered a guilty plea this month to one count of felony DUI, and the second charge was dropped under terms of a plea deal.

In addition to the prison time, commissioner Aimee Anderson ordered Stoudemire to pay about $2,500 in fines. Stoudemire will get 162 days credit for time already spent in custody.

Carrie Stoudemire tried to address Anderson, but became too emotional.
"Thank you for everything that you done," she said. "I'm sorry things didn't ..."
Anderson finished her sentence, "turn out the way you wanted?"

LeBron's mother pleads no-contest in scuffle

The mother of Cleveland Cavaliers star LeBron James pleaded no contest and was found guilty on Friday of four charges after her SUV nearly hit an unmarked police vehicle and she kicked a window of a patrol car.


Gloria James, 38, of Green, pleaded no contest in Municipal Court to reckless operation, speeding, disorderly conduct and a reduced count - originally drunken-driving - of physical control of a motor vehicle under the influence. A fifth count of damaging police property was dismissed.


Judge Lynne Callahan suspended all but three days of a six-month jail term and said the three remaining days can be served by taking a class on the dangers of drugs and alcohol use. Her license was suspended until Jan. 20.
James also must perform 100 hours of community service, pay more than $400 in fines and costs and pay for $150 in damage to the police cruiser.

I almost wonder if they become part of the celebrity umbrella--once in the national spotlight, some celebrities can't handle the pressure and due to the way the american public holds them on a pedestal, they believe they're without reproach. Sometimes even family members are affected by that.

but this could be totally unrelated too, I dunno what her status on this was back in 03.

DUI to me is inexcusable. I got blasted at a comedy club on Saturday, took my keys out of my pocket, gave them to my friend early...and had my family pick me up. It isn't that hard. And if you think it's too inconvenient, then don't drink...sounds stupid, but there were nights I held back a bit because I knew if I got torn up I wouldn't be able to get home.

I'm always getting toasted and everytime I am able to either catch a ride home and pick up my car later or I have even slept in the backseat until I sobered up. No excuse for a mother, with a son making those kind of dollars not to be able to get a ride home or call a taxi, that is ridiculous and sad.
