I just took a look at the make-up of our roster…..and I was amazed to find out there are currently only 11 players on our roster who were with the team prior to 2004. There are only 9 who were ever active in a game prior to 2004 (Y.Bell was on the practice squad/injuried list all of ’03 and E.Moore spent all of 2003 on IR).

In just over 2 years, we have turned over 83% of our roster (44 of 53 players from 2003 are gone). I wonder if any other team has had a turnover even close to that?

Also interesting is that makeup of these “long-time†Dolphins. Of the 11……..8 were drafted by the Dolphins, 2 were Free Agent signings (but neither was anything close to a ‘major’ signing), and one was traded for.

From 1996 (10 yrs ago) to 2003, the Dolphins have traded for 15 players…..only 1 (or approx 7%) remains on the roster.

From 1996 to 2003, the Dolphins have drafted 52 players…….only 8 (approx 15%) remain with the team.

From 1996 to 2003 the Dolphins have signed 33 FA’s (a ridiculously low number, but it is all that the official site lists, seems they only list players signed during th efree agency period)….of those 33, the Dolphins haven’t retained any. The 2 FA signings who are still on our roster were signe d outside the designated FA period…..the total number of those types of signings would likely be closer to 75-100.

DRAFTED
1996 – Zach Thomas - **Longest Tenured Dolphin**
1997 – Jason Taylor
2001 – Chris Chambers
2002 – Travis Minor
2002 – Randy McMichael
2003 – Eddie Moore
2003 – Wade Smith
2003 – Yeremiah Bell

FREE AGENTS
1997 – Olindo Mare
2001 – David Bowens

TRADE
2002 – Ricky Williams

It definitely appears that we are a better drafting team now………the drafts from 1996-2003 have netted us 4 projected starters (maybe 5 since Y.Bell would probably be a starter at safety as of today). The 2005 draft alone has produced 3 projected starters.

Alone, these numbers don’t mean all that much…..as you would have to look at them compared to what the rest of the league has done…..but still, it is a little shocking to see the amount of turnover our roster actually does go through. And it’s still going, before Week 1, players such as O.Mare, W.Smith and E.Moore might not be here any more.

It's definately Saban's team now. What happend to Carey?? Why stop at 2003 and not 2004??

There's definately a change in the numbers\percentages after 2003.........it was the pre-2004 numbers which caught my attention, as it constitutes less than 20% of our roster.

But if anyone is interested.....there are an additional 7 players from the 2004 season:

DRAFTED
Vernon Carey
Will Poole
Derrick Pope
Rex Hadnot

FREE AGENTS
Jeno James
Wes Welker

TRADE
Marty Booker

So that brings the number for '96-'04 to 18 players; 12 Drafted, 4 FA, 2 Traded for.

that makes me sad inside. What a waste

This might make you sadder - of the 52 players we've drafted '96-'03, only 8 (15%) are likely to start anywher in the league in '06 (4 with us plus Surtain in KC, Madison w/ NYG, and Wade (starter??) and Greenwood with the Texans).

So it's not even like it's a case of us losing our talent to other teams like the Steelers are known to do....we just weren't drafting talent.

Interesting to me is the fact that Wanny and Spielman might have actually had a nice effort in their final draft....as 4 of their 6 selections are still with the team a whole 2 years later.....2 are almost guaranteed to start (Hadnot adn Carey) while a 3rd (Poole) should have a chance to start.

Those low numbers are the reason I don't put too much stock into draft picks below the 2nd round. In reality, teams are made up of players that came through various routes (FA, trade, draft, etc). As such, I'm not too concerned over giving up a 2nd for CP or that we gave up so many draft picks for RWs. While it is true that drafting young talent and molding them into starters or solid backups would be ideal, truth is the draft is just a crapshoot and nobody knows who will be a bust or a star. I'ld much rather get a proven player at any position with 2 or 3 years left in him, than draft even one of the most highly sought college players entering the draft. For example, if I were any of the teams in the top 5 or 6 in this year's draft, I would seriously consider getting Schaub over Lein/Young/Cutler...

When Johnson hired Wanny it was the darkest day in Dolphin history. I figured he would end up being the coach if Johnson quit. Other than getting ZT and JT, Johnson was the start of all the downfall. To think I was excited to have Johnson.

Last offseason alone Saban turned over 50% of the roster. 50% of the people on the 2005 roster were not even here in 2004, let alone 2003.

Great info! Through all of the comings and goings of the past couple of years, it never dawned on me that the roster changed so much... it IS a testament to the failure of our former coach I shant name. For ANY NFL or college team (when Pitt fires him) even considering hiring this babooze, wake up and smell the roses!

I can see your point.. but you went overboard with that last statement... what has Schaub done that would merit a top 5 pick?
