An Observation from Middle Ground

Exactly. The Pouncey pick is not a good example to bring up when trying to defend Jeff Ireland. That was a terrible value pick.

Don't get me wrong, I like Pouncey a lot. But the difference in the win/loss column between having the best center in the NFL and the 15th best center in the NFL is nothing compared to the difference of having the best quarterback or cornerback or wide receiver or pass rusher in the NFL and the 10th best in the NFL at those positions.

No. Freakin'. Comparison.

You don't win in the NFL with a team full of grinders. You win with stars scattered in important spots.

you said exactly what i was tryin to say except you said it better...spot on

I wasn't really using Pouncey to defend Ireland. I was using it as a point to show hoops is a guy who tends to not like moves that are made and he backs it up with reasons other than just bashing Jeff Ireland.

LOL Figured you'd be used to it after we were told countless times HOW to be fans during the suck for luck campaign

yeah i got crucified over that also...now look at us...we could only wish we had an andrew luck staring us in the face...now we have to probably go up and get a qb in tannehill who's not nfl ready to play in the top 5 or take a 28 year old rookie qb too high

just our luck...

I guarantee you some people have real different feelings about SFL this afternoon. Real different feelings. It's not until the reality of being a lousy football team that can't get a quarterback really sinks in, and the memory of some crappy wins against a garbage Bills team have faded away that people finally understand what that sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach is all about.

Was reading a Colts message board this morning. They are so happy right now, I want to vomit.

Oh I know. I was on the suck for luck train since the cleveland game week 3. After we won a few games in November we actually were looking at Matt Barkley and at the very worst RG3 as our consolation prize. We were actually disappointed that we might have to settle for Barkley and scoffed at the idea of settling for RG3. How things have changed

I enjoyed reading your reasonable post. I was surprised by the Marshall trade, but I should not have been surprised. B. Marshall is not the type of player that Philbin wants. I believe it is reasonable for Philbin to set a blueprint for the type of players he needs for the offense and defense to be successful. He has three years to be successful with those players.

My impression is that Philbin desires football players that are intelligent, hard working, willing to work within a system, and well balanced. Richard Marshall fits into this description. Soliai may lack on the hard working aspect, but he meets all of the other criteria. B. Marshal was not willing to work within the system. iIcannot imagine Philbin tolerating that regardless of the talent of the player involved. It is hard to blame him for that position. I would have preferred a 2nd round and 3rd round pick for B. Marshall. I accept not overpaying at the QB position if there is not a franchise QB involved. Baker, Slaton, and Mastrud are reasonable resigns. I do not know enough about Hicks to make a comment.

I am not impressed with our offseason, but I do not believe we have done poorly.

I think Solia has proven himself to be hard working after Sparano and Ireland (and Parcells) showed trust in him after he got himself suspended a few years ago.

Hicks has been in the West Coast Offense his entire career. And while the WCO has evolved it's still a complex offense and the basic fundamentals of all WCO are very similar so having a guy like Hicks isn't a bad thing.

As for Marshall, he was drafted into the West Coast Offense and I feel he's at his best in the WCO where he can use his strength and quickness to create big plays. But Philbin is coming from a franchise that is very character based. You didn't have guys from Green Bay really getting into trouble. I can easily see him not wanting that here.
