I’ll never forget hacking away in the Dolphins press box after Miami’s Week 15 stunner against New England in 2013 and reserving hotel rooms for the impending playoff run.The win —- secured by an improbable game-clinching interception by unknown safety Michael Thomas —- improved the Dolphins record to 8-6. They needed only to win one of their final two games against mediocre Bills and Jets teams to clinch a postseason berth.
A few beat writers, including myself, thought it was wise to reserve our hotel rooms. We didn’t even know where the Dolphins would play —- Baltimore, Cincinnati and New England were possibilities —- so we booked them all.
At least we didn’t pay upfront. The Dolphins scored a combined seven points in their final two games, barely even putting up a fight.
Unfortunately, disappointment was the theme in my three years on the beat. The Dolphins made plenty of headlines but it was rarely for their stellar play.
Bullygate, the demise of Jeff Ireland, Mike Wallace’s bitter exit, the mega deal for Ndamukong Suh, the demise of Joe Philbin, the demise of Dennis Hickey and Laremy Tunsil’s draft night free fall kept me burning the midnight oil more often than you’d imagine for covering a perpetually average team.
That doesn’t mean all the moments were forgettable. The Michael Thomas interception —- and a hard-fought win in snowy Pittsburgh the previous week —- nearly turned around a team in disarray from an overblown locker room harassment scandal.
http://dailydolphin.blog.palmbeachp...hts-on-three-years-as-a-dolphins-beat-writer/Beginning next week, I’ll start a new chapter in my career as an editorial writer and opinion columnist for the South Florida Sun Sentinel. It’s a rare chance to tackle local issues in my hometown Broward County and also focus on state and national issues that affect all of us.
After 10 years, it’s not an easy decision to leave the Palm Beach Post. The Post is an excellent media outlet and has always been at the forefront of Dolphins content. Hal Habib, my wingman for the last three years, along with veteran columnist Dave George and the rest of the staff will continue to provide top-notch coverage.
I began my career at the Post as a sportswriter and moved over to the news side for five years, covering city government and politics. I embraced writing stories that had an impact on the community. But I always wanted to experience the glitz and glamour of a pro sports team.
Well, a player’s wife wished AIDS on me. I can cross that off my bucket list.
