Mike Awesome was found dead today at his home in Tampa, FL. Right now it's being ruled a suicide, as he was found hanging, until the autopsy is done.

Another black eye for wrestling.

Awesome was one of the better big man in the business in the late 90s/early 2000s. His matches in ECW were very violent and pretty fun/cool to watch. He was stuck with terrible gimmicks in WCW and never really given a chance in the WWE which is too bad because he could have really made some big money if he was given a chance due to his size and skills.

RIP Mike.

I am deeply saddened by Awesome dying. I loved his ECW and FMW work, and I hated how he was mistreated in WCW and WWE. He got blackballed a lot in the US.

The way Awesome handled business in the states, he deserved to be blackballed imo. Anyway, I saw this too. Very sad. Before I saw that they found him hanging, I would have bet money on something along the lines of "natural causes" or heart failure. It happens all too often in wrestling.

Awesome was just that though. The man could move better than anyone his size. Plus, he was tougher than heck. Broke his femur and still wrestlied on it for 15+ minutes.

I once saw a match of his in FMW where he literally got part of his head blown off and he still continued wrestling. A fantastic talent but a horrible business sense. Too bad, he could have been one of the greats. R.I.P.

A lot of wrestlers have issues with steroid, alcohol and drug abuse in general. Thats why so many of them are dying so young and from heart problems. Steroids overwork your heart and abusing drugs and alcohol along with that cant be good for you.

Well if you're talkinga bout the ECW thing, he wasn't getting paid but thta's not what I meant. I was talking more about how he was treated once he settled down in WCW (see That 70's Guy and Fat Chick Thriller) or how he got released by the WWE just because Taker didn't like his style.

WOW Wrestlers die young

A lot of wrestlers get addicted to pain killers, and die far after they've rehabilitated (Brian Pillman,Eddie Guerrero,Davey Boy Smith). A lot of wrestlers end up getting enlarged hearts due to their years of abuse (or in the case of Kerry Von Eric, commit suicide instead of going to jail for drug abuse).

A very small minority have died because of steroid abuse (though guys like Billy Graham and Test could very well if you look at how much their intestines grew from the steroids)

Davey Boy Smith was one of the largest roid heads in the buisness. I know this for a fact. Pillman wasn't off HGH or painkillers either, but your point is still valid. Most of these guys die young due to not only the abuse they take in the ring, but the effects from years and years of drug and alcohol abuse.

The reason he got those types of gimmicks and wasn't well liked by people like the Undertaker was because of the way he handled himself. Yes the ECW thing had a huge part in it, however you can't disrespect veterans like Taker and you can't stiff people in the ring multiple times after multiple warnings. Awesome was perfect for Japan because they handled things differently. He was perfect for the old ECW (even the screwing over part since Heyman did it just the same), but he was not a "corporate" or mainstream wrestler.

Still sad to see him go though, he was certainly great in the ring.

Ah I disagree, I don't blame him for leaving ECW, where he wasn't getting paid nightly and was champion, for WCW with guranteed money. After all he did the right thing by coming back to ECW and dropping the title to Tazz, which he could have said "no way" but he didn't. He has my respect for that.

As for the disrespecting veterans and being stiff, yup that will land you in the dog house quicker than you can count to 3.

I didn't say they didn't use roids, but they didn't die because of the roids. Davey Boy had hundreds of different painkillers(maybe thousands) hidden throughout his house after he broke his back in WCW. He stopped cold turkey after his wife tried to scare him by taking a bunch of the pills (and she OD'd but was ok).

P.S. OFF TOPIC, just thought I would put it here since this is a wrestling thread of sorts!

Watch this video of Ahmed Johnson. It left me speechless!

That's nuts. It's too bad because I was a big fan of Ahmed's. He could have been a HUGE star in the business if he didn't keep getting hurt and hurting other wrestlers in the ring.

Eh. To me, the industry as a whole is crooked. I find it very interesting that every time there is a wrestler death, the industry itself is very quick to find a culprit OTHER than steroids. The fact is, steroids is a huge factor in all of these deaths. Just because it may not be in their system at the time of death, doesn't mean it wasn't a reason for their bodies failure.

Eddy Guerrero was another big roid head, yet when he died, everyone was quick to announce that it was due to PAST abuses. Yet, an entire steroids policy was implemented due to him dieing.

The entire business tries to protect itself by blaming just about everything but one of the main culprits. Instead of fixing it, they try to hide it.

Oh I totally agree with this post. But I have to give the WWE some credit because it appears they're trying to fix the problem with their new drug policy.
