Yes, I know this has been done to death. Yes, I know my views probably don't hold any waight withanyone else. Yes, I am going to do the thread anyway. :p

-I am firmly in the Gus Frerotte bandwagon now. I have been a Feeley supporter since we got him, but this last game flipped me. Gus seemed poised in the pocket and made great reads. Yes, he overthrew his receivers but that is a timing issue that I think will get worked out with more practice time. The key is that he was recognizing the open receivers and not hesitating to get the ball there. One play to Chambers almost connected had it not beed for a great defensive recovery from Darius to knock it away at the last second. Like I said, he overthrew the receivers, but at least he was making the proper reads.

-Feeley, however, looked bad. He checked down to his running backs ok, but he still locks on. He should have never thrown that ball deep to Newson who was double teamed and double teamed good. Newson should have tried a little harder to knock the ball down ( more on that later ) but still, bad throw. Plus, I don't know if anyone else noticed this, but at one point on the sidelines in the fourth quarter, right after Sage threw his TD, they showed Sage, Gus and A.J. Sage an dGus were looking over the play prinouts wih a coach while A.J. just stood there looking around, walking around, not paying attention. I understand why Sage was looking at it since he was involved, but I was impressed with Gus looking over the plays. Almost like he wanted to learn ore even if it was from a third string QB. A.J. looked like he couldn't care less. That worried me. :yell:

-Ricky looked very good. It was great to see him juke the hell out of the same player twice on one play. It reminded me of year's past and how great he really was. I hope we don't trade him unless it is deemed well worth it.

- Having said that, Gordon is quikly playing himself off the team. He goes down on first contact and fumbled badly to start the third quarter. Sammy Morris, a true FB is out performing him again and made a sweet lunge for a first down sacrficing his body in the process. I can't see Gordon doing that and succeeding. Gordon's only insurance is that Ronnie isn't in camp yet and Ricky is going to be suspended. That leaves Morris and crap ( Minor, Gordon ). I would not be surprised to see him gone though.

-We have a good problem ad WR. Booker, Chambers, Boston, Gilmore, Mann, Thompson, Welker, etc. The problem is we can't keep all of them. My guess is that Mann gets cut but finds another place to flourish. Thompson and Newson should be cut as well. If you look at the play where A.J. was intercepted, Newson pulled up and took his eye off the ball because he was worried about getting smacked by the Safety coming over. I don't want receivers that are afraid to get hit. He sealed his own fate imo.

-O-line did pretty good. Frerotte an dFeeley were upright pretyt much on every throw. They need to build on that and continue to get better.

-Defense looked good. I think even the second stringers and cmap fodderers did well. They need to work on their run d some but whenever you get 5 sacks basically against first stringers, it is a good thing. The blitzes worked and the DB's played a lot better in the first half. A fluke TD pass and a somewhat lucky punt return was all that really happened in the negative early.

-Jason Glenn and the DT Shaw are playing themselves onto the squad. Both could provide solid depth, especially Evans. A rotation in the middle with Carter, Traylor, Zgonina, Vickerson, Wright, Shaw and Chester should be pretty good.

-Crowder is looking like a steal, along with Daniels. Both have played hard and good so far. Crowder played three quarters with both the first and second stringers. I wouldn't be surprised if he surplants a healthy Seau by the end of the year.

-Madison needs to learn how to tackle.

-All in all, I came away pleased with this game. I know they lost but multiple freak bounces and a returned punt are very unlikely to occur again. I am just glad it happened in preseason. Plus, our defense looked sharp and the offense was good, only a few timing issues to get worked out and the team looked good all around.

great analysis. I agree with pretty much everything you said. And yes I remember when the cameras were showing the 3 QB's and Feeley was looking at everything except the play being reviewed. If we noticed...dont you think Saban did also.

Thank you so much for that Recap Samphin, I was on the road all day/night yesterday so I didn't get to hear or watch the game and I have missed any and all other comments on here about it... so this is really the first recap i've seen and i'm pleased to hear about Gus and the O-Line... and the D... They say you're biggest improvement is between your first and second game and we'll only get better.. hopefully this is sign of more things to come... i'm very encouraged based on your re-cap.. thanks again!

Don't you mean "Shaw?"

As in Josh Shaw? (I can see where you cought a brain fart and said Josh Evans but meant Josh Shaw.)

It kind of funny, cause I remember learning to look at someone different when passing the ball. Why cant it be simple as Saban saying Stop looking at your receiver you are throwing too? Does it take a major skill or just some practice at that?

If madison hasn't learned to tackle by now, (and he hasn't) then he never will. Otherwise great post!

it's hard breaking habits some times, but
I think Aj Feeley has the major problem of staring down the receivers. I'm sure there's drills that could be done to help that, or at least drills where the qb uses his peripheral vision, maybe Feely or Gus have bad peripheral vision, because maybe there could be a dril where Feeley and Frerotte look on the the right side of the field, with two receivers, and have there heads thowards that way, but use their peripheral vison, and try to find the open guy using thaqt, and then turn their head, and step into their throw in a fluid motion to the receiver on the other side, once that starts working then do it from the whole field.

Yeah. After I posted it, I went to bed. I have been fighting a cold and made that post on Nyquil. When I climbed into bed I thought to myself that I had put the wrong name. Oh well. Yes, I meant Josh SHAW,
