"He's a real smart football player -- man, he showed that once he walked in," Jordan said. "He's willing to work, he's one of the guys that's been doing everything you ask of him. For a rookie, being only his first few weeks, he's been going above and beyond. I feel like he's going to have a hellova career."He was once thought of as a third-round pick, but a 5.2 second 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine, a positive marijuana test and perceived character issues combined to plummet his stock and cause the rookie defensive tackle to go undrafted. Johnson said he has no regrets because he learned a "lesson in life."

And despite the bumpy path he took to Miami, Johnson said he never lost faith in his ability to make an impact on an NFL roster because he is used to overcoming adversity.

"
I had some off the field issues. Some people say I had character issues, but, at the end of the day, the Lord gave me an opportunity to be here," Johnson said. "And I'm just taking this opportunity and running with it. So yeah I had some setbacks, but I'm coming back for a major comeback."

Fortunately for Johnson, it doesn't matter how you performed in college, if your 40 time is up to par or what round you were drafted in when players step between the white lines.

"I think the great thing about is, now that we're here it doesn't matter," said Landry, when asked what round talent Johnson had. "It doesn't matter because every guy has to earn his keep. Now it's his job to come out here like the rest of us guys and earn our jobs."

Johnson, Garrison Smith and Kamal Johnson all looked good in minicamp. One of them will be on the 53 man roster imo and at least 1 other will make the practice squad.

You know, the more I see of Hickey, the more I like him and the team he is assembling. Even the kids with "problems" seem to be on the upswing. He just appears to get it when it comes to putting together a team rather than just a bunch of misfit parts. That was Ireland's Achilles heel.

It does seem that he gets it on a football level that Ireland didn't. However, it's early.

AND we still lack explosiveness.

KR/PR -- Thigpen and a bunch of 4.6 players trying out. Really?

WR -- The only explosive player at WR is Wallace. Hopefully Landry makes plays, but still is 4.6 at the end of the day. The rest of the WRs are essentially journeymen trying to make it stick or mediocre players who are simply consistent. NOT explosive.

TE -- Non-explosive is putting it nicely. Stable in Clay, but after that huge question marks.

Yes, Hickey had a massive mess to fix, and seems to be decent, but the jury is still out. Still massive holes at skill positions and question marks abound on OL.

LB corps may be hurting.

CB -- big question marks in Taylor, Davis and Aikens. And Finnegan come back?

S -- How long can Delmas stay healthy? And even if healthy, can he cover the ground Clemons did?

Lots of things have to go right for the Dolphins to make some noise. So the jury is still out on Hickey.

40 time without pads on does not equate to playing speed. Landry is a football player and plays much faster than his 40 time. I predict he will be a candidate for offensive rookie of the year.
He has already stood out in OTA's and he was the best WR for LSU.
The secondary will be solid. Your post is overly pessimistic.

Ireland kept recruiting players with serious mental health issues. Marshall (borderline personality disorder), Bess (severe depression and drug abuse), Incognito (total sociopath), J-mart (severe depression also allegedly suicidal), etc... and when they invariably imploded on his watch, he looked bewildered - not my fault. Even Vontae, for all his natural talent had the maturity of a 12 year old child (I'm not joking). Last year Jeff's fetish was drafting talent that was injured (Dion Jordan, Jamar Taylor, Dallas Thomas). OK to take a medical risk with one, but the top 4 draft picks were used (we moved up to get Dion) on players with known serious limitations because of injury.
Still early days but Dennis Hickey appears to be really trying to help Joe Philbin by drafting/recruiting more talent who can make a more tangible contribution. Furthermore, we seem to have a more united owner, front office and coaching team who are even welcoming the input of former champion Dolphins (what a unique and radical idea). There is more talent on the roster than at any time in the past 15 years. We might just be on the way back.

LDaniel won't be happy until we have a team of players who run a 4.1

You hit it right on the head, no pun intended. Ireland could find physical talent but could not fit people physically or psychologically to the team. He continuously put square pegs in round holes and couldn't figure out why they didn't work. As you said, he has a penchant for nut cases...he has no idea how to read people nor to gauge how they will fit in the locker room. Hickey is already light years ahead on this front.

LD, we have to fix the gaping holes before we can focus on team speed. With a little time for Tannehill in the pocket and some creativity from Lazor, I am cautiously optimistic that we will see far more explosion from our offense this year.

Clay is not explosive?
Breaking multiple tackles on multiple different receptions and taking them to the house is explosive

anyway back to topic this kid seems like a steal..
hope he sticks around so we can see what he can do in year 2 or 3

I agree the jury is still out. It's always exciting to have change, but what does that change bring? That's what we have to see. I worry about injured FA's being brought in as well. I guess this is year 1 and Hickey maybe wants to build the bottom third of the roster before making his splash? That's what Ireland always did. Always building that bottom end it seemed. Never really got beyond that until 2 years ago when the splash was Wallace / Ellerbe. At least the cap's not a mess so Hickey may be able to make his splash next year. I'm not sure. But I'm pretty sure this is not the year he is hoping to be judged on. I guess he has to see what we have before doing anything drastic too. I'm just thinking out loud.

Clay made some big plays. However, an explosive player is one that isn't easily single-covered. One who consistently breaks open games if left alone in coverage.

Plenty of times where Clay was single covered without threatening a D.

We need to avoid the tendency to puff up players just because they are Phins.

Normally when that happened teams put a db on him.. That should open something else up..
He is a lbs nightmare it take an athletic safety or db to shut him down
