I know removing your helmet in the field of play is a penalty. However, does anyone remember a couple years ago, a player (I think he was on the Browns) ripped his helmet off and essentially lost the game for his team because of the penalty. I think they blocked a FG and then the penalty gave them another down to try the FG somehow?

Was it due to the rule that doesn't allow the game to end on a defensive penalty? That's why it wasn't such a big deal today, because there was still a minute left? But had time expired on Porter's sack, they would've gotten 1 more play due to the penalty?

It was Dwayne Rudd I think against the Chiefs.

It was a field goal on third down so they got another kick. The very reason teams kick on third to get another chance if something goes wrong or right. It was a Clowns game!

Dumb move by Porter to take off the helmet and toss it. There was no need to do that.

I don't think he does it if the game wasn't over. He knew 4th and 10 was it for them if they had the stop. And he got the crowd into it, if u are going to do that, that was a the best time to do it.

Wrong it wasn't on a field goal....He had thrown the QB down on the last play of the game and then ran down the field and threw his helmet off but the QB managed to stay on his feet and kept the play alive and 15 yd penalty got them into FG range...The difference being that Browns player did it in the course of a play not after it.

Personal foul. 15 yards, 1st down. JP knew it was what it was. He will be fined. I don't blame him on this one. (Oh yeah...Dead Ball foul)

that is correct. the play was still going on when dwayne rudd (browns) ripped his helmet off celebrating before the play was blown dead. he was looking away from the play and assumed that the game was over.

It was not a field goal. They were out of field goal range. The Browns player THOUGHT the game was over, because he THOUGHT the ball carrier was down. He took his helmet off, and it turned out he was wrong. The ball carrier was not down.

That means the personal foul happened while the play was still live. The clock had run out, but due to the fact that the play was still live, the game cannot end if a defensive penalty occurred during the play.

Joey Porter had no chance of endangering his team. The helmet came off well after the play was over. The whistle blew, and the ball was dead, and since it was 4th down, the turnover had already occurred. Had it been 1st, 2nd, or 3rd down, it would have been 15 for the Niners.

The Rudd play was hilarious because he thought he sacked the Kansas City QB, then he ran down the field with his helmet off - meanwhile, the QB did fumble - into the arms of an O-lineman who ran about 15 yds. Then you add on the 15 for the helmet coming off and KC was in FG range - kicked and won. I remember thinking, man this just feels wrong - Rudd was about 30 yds downfield behind the line of scrimmage celebrating - and got caught on a technicality. Very funny play.

I almost pissed myself when they threw the flag. I could just barely remember another team losing because of a player taking his helmet off but I couldn't remember what had happened.
