I have to believe that most here see that we are having problems in filling the GM position, and it's not based on having good, young talent (which we have) or having the cap space to make moves (which we have).

So, is it Ross, having a coach in Philbin or, a combo of both? What else could it be?

Joe. Allow the GM to pick his FO and HC and it a plum job

I think I'm with Ryan on this one.

Right or wrong, Dawn Aponte is a huge problem for this team right now.

Does anyone have a link to where it says Ross called Farmer "Roy"?

Being saddled with staff they don't necessarily want is the problem most likely. So Ross. He should have cleaned house.

I think the issue is Ross and ergo the people that are advising him.
The process went way too long which allowed Tampa to snake Licht and bored journalists to take over the narrative.

Though Aponte may herself be disliked I will never believe that the presence of a capologist is that much of an issue since almost all teams have them.

Philbin is a non-issue IMO.

Unfortunately Miami isn't an elite position right now and certain candidates would have likely said no regardless of what we have done.

I think what people don't realize is that IRELAND...yes, Ireland. Left the team because he was being neutered. Ross said this is the way its going to be, Ireland said no, and he left. Remember it was reported that Ireland didn't get fired.

I don't think that Ross has magically changed what he was going to make Ireland with a new hire. The new hire I think will have Ireland's neutered powers and that's basically a GM title, in name only, and more like a simple player personnel guy and that's it. Essentially the only FO part he has is to be the manager of the scouting department. Draft and FA player's that's it. Nothing else.

GMs want to come in, build and mold their own legacy. Not this. Again, not even IRELAND wanted this gig.

GM problems??? Ireland's still gone right?

There are no problems other than the ridiculous story lines manufactured by bored and misinformed media/fans.

You know I doubt we get a true post mortem on this off season. Though I wish someone would write about it in the future.
People who hate Philbin will blame him.
People who hate Aponte will blame her.

The Blame:
I think this offseason can be boiled down to one simple phrase: "The road to hell is paved with good intentions."
Mostly on Ross though it boils down to taking wrong advice from wrong people. My suspicion is that some of this falls on Peterson, who may be out of touch with the way things work these day(i.e. 24 hour news cycle).

The biggest factor:
Speed and Decisiveness
Tampa
Fired Staff on Dec 30th
Hired Lovie Jan1st
Hired Jason Lich Jan 20th

Fins took a week to decide to Fire Ireland(or demote him until he quit)
They wanted to canvas far and wide leaving no stone unturned.
This clearly does not work in the modern NFL. Not only did Tampa snake one of their perceived finalists Jason Licht but the longer this went the worse the process looked.
We came off as indecisive.
Other faux pas didn't help either like Farmer apparently being called Roy. That just looks bad.

Power Structure.
I think Miami is trying to push a weakened GM model. That is obviously going to turn some people off. If the power structure is going to be so unique then we should have just elevated Gaine. Though admittedly we would have been crucified in the media had we just done that from the beginning IMO

Media:
I am not going to blame the media as much as I will blame Ross' for poor handling of the media. The crazy FPA situation, Peterson leaking about the favorites. The constant disclosures and refutations. It seemed like a death by a thousand cuts. It may not really matter in the end but it seems as though the fins spent the last 2 weeks taking body blows.
Miami was never ahead of the narrative and constantly out there putting out PR fires.
Hickey is a finalist, Hickey isn't a finalist.
Everything was reactive not proactie.

The big problem really isn't Ross or philbin or aponte, none of that is a huge deal. It's a business structure that works for lots of companies, and it's quite common for a lot of companies to maintain there talent when hiring new bosses.

Here's where the problem lays:

Your trying to hire a outsider who doesn't want to end up being on the outside looking in. Gaine, aponte, Ross, philbin, all already have established relationships with one another. Imagine being the outsider coming to tell them what to do, it's not easy.

And unlike in most businesses where a CEO, if he loses his job, almost always finds himself a great job immediately after, gms may have one chance at it, if they aren't already establishes. In the NFL, it use to be rare to see these guys turn down top notch jobs, over the years that's changed. These top candidates are more willing to wait it out.

So really, the problem lays with insecurity among candidates more than anything else. I really can't blame them either, but I also think ross can make this work, assuring the candidate that there position is exactly what it is, and the staff is all on board is a big part of it.

Ross...flat out...Ross. The guy continually shows he has no clue how to be an NFL owner. Why would any real candidate want to work for this moron?
