are we in the playoffs with pat?

No. He wouldn't have changed Ronnie's Fumble in the Buffalo game. He wouldn't have scored a TD against New England or Atlanta. Hypothetically speaking of course. Noone really knows the answer to this question.

See, now this is a good question.

Patrick Surtain was one of the biggest losses of the offseason and losing him dramatically changed the nature of the pass defense. Yes, we have to concede that the pass defense had been declining steadily for a few seasons, but prior to this year it had always been pretty good (and sometimes dominant).

Sam Madison always operated well as the #2 corner as he didn't have to defend the team's top playmaker. Never great, just good.

Without Surtain, Madison had to be "the" guy and he's just not capable of being a shutdown corner. I certainly think this year's pass defense would have been drastically better with Surtain in the lineup...but it just wasn't possible due to the salary cap.

This year's secondary was too weak and inexperienced without him and Knight. The Dolphins defense was no longer capable of winning games for Miami.

But Michael Vick might not complete 60% of his passes, and Kelly Holcomb might not have played well in the game.

Patrick Surtain was really the Dan Marino of the secondary on the Fins, just like Zach Thomas is the cornerstone of the defense as a whole. Without him, the pass defense is just not the same.

yes i would agree...though i'm not sure pat would have done enough better than travis but i think the fact that travis would be playing the nickle back we would have had a much more solid secondary. maybe the same goes for poole's injury..he would have outperformed pats measley 3 int season i think.

Ugh. Quality seasons for a corner are not merely measured in INTs. A few years back, Deltha O'Neal had 9 ints in one season for the Broncos due to his nature of gambling on some passes and despite it actually had a pretty mediocre year as the times he didn't pick the ball, he gave up big plays.

Travis Daniels hasn't played anywhere close to a level of what Patrick Surtain did while he was with the Miami Dolphins. Nowhere near. Patrick in his prime was a shutdown corner.

you can ask the same question of ANY team that needs to make roster cuts because of the salary cap. All teams need to let good vets go at some point.

For once and for all be thankful that Phin management was disciplined enough to get something in trade for a guy that would have walked just one year later giving us nothing in return.

Would Pat have made enough of a difference this year to help this team go somewhere?

NO WAY!

Phins made the right move.
Many on here just can't grasp what has to be done to manage a cap so that the team will be competitive in the long term.

The question wasn't "Did Miami make the right move" or "Did Miami have to make the move"...it was a hypothetical question.

And I think Patrick Surtain playing this year does make a big difference as the secondary wouldn't have played so poorly all year and less "big plays" would be given up.

I've often wondered if we should have a "Gimme back my bullets" thread.

Izzo
Surtain
Wade
O-gun
Draft picks we gave away for AJ and Gordon
et al

o-gun was easily replaceable...obviously we're a sacking machine now and JT is thriving on his own yet again.

I liked the Booker trade because while Wale was the better player, respective to his position, Marty Booker has been an unsung hero and made a lot of key downfield plays this year. And we are still recording sacks.

God I miss that draft pick that we threw away for Feeley. Does anyone know who they drafted with that pick?

The funny thing is on the web board I used to post on, I and the few others who lambasted the trade got called pessimists and sour pusses until the season started :)
