Ron Artest, talking to children as part of his community service sentence, defended his actions in one of the worst brawls in U.S. sports history.

"Someone started trouble and I ended it," Artest told about 50 children Wednesday at a panel on black empowerment at the Judge Mathis Community Center. "I would always encourage you to protect yourself but in certain situations, if you can avoid them, avoid them."

Artest was at the center of the November 2004 brawl at a Detroit Pistons game. It started when Artest, then with the Indiana Pacers, fouled Pistons center Ben Wallace late in a blowout game.

As the confrontation on the court appeared to calm down, a fan hit Artest, who was lying on the scorer's table, with a cup. Artest charged into the stands and threw punches, along with teammate Stephen Jackson.

Pistons fan John Green was convicted of punching Artest but was found not guilty of throwing a drink on the player.

"I like John Green, he's real." Artest said. "I don't have any problems with John Green. He did something really stupid but a lot of people do stupid things. God forgives, so I'm forgiving too."

But Artest, who plays for the Sacramento Kings, said he really doesn't think about that night in The Palace of Auburn Hills.

"It's so over. That night has been so far over, I really don't have any thoughts on it."

He's 100% correct.

I've backed him up about the situation ever since the incident.

I agree to a certain extent...but does he really have to tell little kids that:lol: ?

Artest is a freakin' idiot. The fan he decked wasn't even the fan that threw the cup, so he didn't "end" anything.

Not to mention that while I disagree with the typical mentality that a paying fan should be entitled to do whatever they want, throwing a cup is hardly akin to knocking someone's teeth out.

Someone should knock Ronnie's out.

How is he correct? He acted like a vigilante, decked someone who DIDN'T throw the cup, and started a melee?

He should have spent a day or two in jail like the average American would have.

a cup hardly excuses or warrants throwing punches. The fan was wrong to throw the cup, but Artest was 100% wrong to do what he did. His analogy is ridiculous and he shouldn't speak to children.

Again...to reiterate...the guy whom Artest decked was the WRONG GUY.

1) Artest SHOULD have been thrown out of the league for life for running into the stands and punching fans.

2) If he is going to spew this nonsense then the NBA should suspend him again.

3) This guy is the poster boy as to why the NBA went from the #1 or #2 sports league in this country in the early 90's, to about #6 behind the likes of Golf, NASCAR, Poker and god knows what else. And why the league went from having a great TV deal on a NETWORK like NBC which aired a ton of games for them to now having to having Western Conference Finals games on Cable tv at about 10:30 at night!!!!! The "hoods" and the "thugs" have taken over the league and run it into the damn ground!

And anyone who defends an athlete who during the middle of the game runs into the stands and starts punching fans not knowing who did what or when is a bigger idiot than the guy who actually did it is!!! Seriously, Artest is a street thug who shouldn't be allowed to play in the NBA. He gets a 2nd chance and goes off and says this nonsense to kids??????????????? Are you kidding me. Hey David Stern, suspend him again. He obviously didn't learn his lesson the first time!

Agreed. No, nobody can excuse a fan throwing stuff at a player, but the end hardly justified the means at all. I know the players are often extra emotional during games and smaller things might set them off, but it doesn't excuse a vigilante brawl, especially considering he decked the wrong dude.

Some of you whom are rationalizing this are missing the big picture. He is spreading a message to kids that violence is an acceptable means to solve problems even when what happened to you wasn't "violent" (cup being tossed at you)

Any parent that would have their kids attending an event Ron Artest is at is a idiot. Artest really is just a dumb guy that doesnt know any better. His community service should be spent away from kids, hes not someone that has anything to offer to them. Heres a great example of a guy, jumps into the stands hits the wrong fan(s), uses the suspension to promote a album, then after a year off comesback and STILL doesnt understand what a fool he was. Idiot.

It's all good, Artest will never see a ring, the team he had the best chance to win it with before they imploded dealt him.

Humorous that Artest would call anybody's actions "stupid".
