Jay Cutler’s success in Denver has been blown way out of proportion, and new coach Josh McDaniels was right to have questions about the fourth-year quarterback.
Cutler earned a Pro Bowl berth in 2008 based on his 4,526 passing yards. But in more important metrics, namely wins (8-8) and TD-to-INT differential (25-to-18), Cutler came up short.
Many of Cutler’s biggest yardage games ended up in the loss column -- the Broncos were 3-4 when he threw for more than 300 yards. Denver’s turnstile defense upped the tempo of the game and gave Cutler plenty of opportunities to gain yards in between the 20s, even if those yards didn’t do much to help the Broncos win.
Cutler also benefited from a defensively challenged schedule last season. Thanks in large part to his porous AFC West competition, Cutler faced defenses that ranked in the NFL’s bottom 10 in a majority of his games. The highest-ranked defense he faced all year was No. 9 Tampa Bay. Cutler may think twice about wanting to leave Denver when he looks at the schedules of the teams interested in him.
Cutler also might find life tougher outside of Mike Shanahan’s offense. Shanahan’s offense regularly landed near the top spot in total yardage throughout his years in Denver. Cutler gained more passing yards than his predecessors, but that’s mainly because all the injuries to the Denver running backs over the last two seasons forced Shanahan to go to the air more than he would have liked. While Cutler did a decent job in that offense, Shanahan probably could have found a lot of quarterbacks capable of putting up big numbers.
McDaniels may be young, but he’s been around a fantastic quarterback his whole career and knows what it takes to succeed at that position. If he wasn’t sold on Cutler, that should make other teams around the NFL nervous. For all the highlight-worthy passes Cutler made, McDaniels had to wince at the mental mistakes and forced throws that burned the Broncos last season.
It’s probably not an accident that the teams reportedly interested in Cutler all have iffy track records when it comes to evaluating the position -- take, for example, the Bucs, 49ers, Jets, Lions and Redskins. Big arms or big stats have fooled all of those teams in the recent past. Now, as they try to put together the right offer to land Cutler, they’re lining up to make the same mistake again.

Ive been saying this all along

This is no better then the credibility on Finheavens messages boards.

Especially by saying Cutler's mental mistakes "burned" the broncos. I would argue the pitiful defensive unit they put on the field burned them.

Not impressed at all, or close to being swayed.

Call me when someone other then a random blogger makes valid points.

The guy who wrote this article brings up way better facts then what i've been seeing on this message board. The best D he faced all year was #9

The main reason why Cutler threw so many interceptions was because of his terrible defense, which cannot be argued. The fact is, a QB is going to need to force a lot more throws when the team he's leading has little shot at winning unless they score 30 or more points. "You play to win the game", and if Cutler played 'Pennington ball', Denver would've been lucky to been a 4 win team. Fewer mistakes, but also far fewer points scored. Don't get me wrong, playing ball control offense is good and can win you plenty of games if you have a decent defense, but not so much when you have a defense that gives up (on average) 28 points per game. It's quite telling that Cutler is 13-1 over his career in games where his defense has given up 21 points or less.

Heres another link for you http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=4031893&campaign=rss&source=NFLHeadlines

In games where the Broncos have allowed 21 points or fewer, Cutler is an impressive 13-1, and that only loss was to Green Bay in 2007 when the Packers won the coin toss and Brett Favre threw an 82-yard touchdown pass on the first play of overtime.
Cutler set several franchise passing records last season, when he threw for 4,526 yards, 25 touchdowns and 18 interceptions. In his 37-game career in Denver, he's completed 62.5 percent of his passes for 9,024 yards, 54 TDs and 37 interceptions.

I have a very strong feeling that many of his 'carless' plays would be eliminated by just having a stronger defense behind him. He's also young, at 25 years old. It's amazing that most fans on here judge him by what he's done recently, and act as if that's his ceiling. He's one of the better young quarterbacks in the game right now, and he's just barely scatched the surface of his potential.

yeah, from what i've read on these forums, just about every player in the league has "just scratched the surface"

I think the link I posted portrayed a pretty fair and unbias view of both sides. I am sort of staying quiet about this because I am a little bias about thios topic. I wanted to do exactly what Denver did back in that Draft. Im still pissed off at saban for screwing up that draft. Hey but at least we still got Jason Allen here. Afterall, he is the Jay Cutler of CB's. :rolleyes2:

I think you would be hard pressed to find more than a handfull (at most) quarterbacks in the NFL that have more upside than Jay Cutler. The difference between Cutler and 'most other quarterbacks', particularly other young quarterbacks, is that Cutler is already good. There's also every reason to believe that he would be better if he had a decent defense behind him. That my friend would make him one of the elite quarterbacks in the NFL.

Who really cares about Cutler. He won't be a Phin anytime soon, so **** him.

Yeah I have to agree that this really does not belong on the main boad. It should be dicussed in the general nfl area, IMO.

I definitely agree that Cutler is waaayyy overrated, but the Jets will still be so much better off with him. I just hope they sell the farm to get him.

He's kind of a cry baby, but he surely has a rocket arm. I am betting he wins a superbowl at some point with some team (other than the broncos) during his career. I went to the Broncos game against the Dolphins last year and let me tell you, when he is out there, in the back of your mind you know he has the arm to score a TD at any moment. He's got talent that is for sure, but a big mouth too. If their defense would have been worth spit or they would not have lost like 5 running backs i am sure their season would have been much different. I like Henne though, and i LOVE Pennington, so i think we are good.

And Pennington is 1-3 this year against top 10 defenses.. and most likely more than just a tad worse than that over his career. Doesn't that mean he's not the guy to take us to The Promised Land, based on this criterion alone?
