Assume:

- Early discussions over options led them to decide that Tannehill was plan A
- They didn't want to trade up (ie, can't let the world know & possibly get jumped in the draft)

Does what they did over the last 1-2 months make more sense? They try to get Manning, but aren't seriously upset when it doesn't happen. They bring in Flynn, but want to pay him backup $ because they are drafting Tannehill anyway (and smokescreen). Heck, they even talk to Alex to make it all look good.

The big problem all along is timeline - the option they want happens after all the free agent options are gone. So if they do get jumped, they have nothing (ie, you don't know if you will get plan A until B, D, and D are no longer options!!).

So ASSUMING that they decided they wanted Tannehill, what else could they have done differently until last night?

Oh - I'm also presuming that right after they hired Philbin & Sherman, that must have been talk of the meeting on day 1 (deciding if they wanted their future starter to be Tannehill, Flynn...etc)

I don't think they could have done much differently. Maybe not flirted with Alex Smith. That had everyone nervous.

It would have been very difficult to completely smokescreen the interest in Tannehill given Mike Sherman. At least the front office didn't buy into the whole "trade up to #3 talk." They could have traded down, but then you risk losing your guy. So really, I think they played it the only way they could have.

It would be great to be a fly on the wall in all of the meetings.

The stress level of a professional sports GM and Owner must be astronomical...kudos to them

Absolutely. I'm not sure if I, personally, like the Tannehill trade - but presuming that was their man, I can see near heart attacks with all those last second trades. All the off-season work possibly going down the toilet leaving you with nothing.

Maybe years from now we'll get a somewhat true version of what they were thinking for the last couple of months, who really was plan A & how much went according to plan.

And last night was crazy with trades. It seemed like undervalued (according to past years) moves. Jax moving up two spots for a 4th rounder seemed crazy to me. So it seems like it wouldn't have cost much to jump to 6 or 7.

We will never really know the answer. But, if they wanted him all along i am glad we have him!

Has there ever been a report regarding what our contract offer to Flynn was? Everyone assumes we didn’t see him as a starter and low balled him. I’m just not convinced that was the case. Based on Ireland’s comments after drafting Tannehill, it seems like he was high on him all along, but is that genuine or was he really our third choice after Manning and Flynn?

If you look at it from a sheer money situation, drafting Ryan Tannehill was our only real choice. We will sign him to a 4-5 year contract at less then half of what let's say Matt Flynn wanted.

But we also had to bring Manning, Flynn and Smith in to chill the fans out. Way too many fans do not seem to understand the salary cap.

The thing that you're not taking into account is Ross' gift for gab with the media and his knack for setting sky high expectations with truly mind numbingly inane quotes. Let's plan on retiring #17 before the rookie even has put on the uniform.

The owner created the media circus with Manning and Flynn not Ireland or the new coach.

I'm sure Ireland, Philbin and Ross talked abut their plan for QB when Philbin was hired, BEFORE Ross went rogue with the press. :d-day:

You're absolutely right... if Tanny was their target all along, they left a lot to chance or at least to what is out of their control. IMO they were perfectly fine with riding with Moore if the stars didn't align just right as they obviously share the same higher opinion of Matt that it became apparent this weekend that was shared by many of the talking heads but clearly not by everyone around here! I've been maintaining from the get-go that Philbin felt as comfortable with MM that he did with Flynn.. and even now, would have no problem riding with him for this season and maybe the next if he can replicate or improve upon his 6-3 close-out.

I too believe Moore is a gamer and can hold down the fort for 1 or 2 years. Everyone saw improvement in Moore once he got 1st team reps and became comfortable with Daboll's system. With Philbin, O'Keefe, & Sherman, Moore should be able to escalate his play from the second half of last season.

I think they wanted him all along, and tried to get the best short term answer they could find within reason...Garrard was the only one who fit the plan and was willing to do it.
