Where is the reset button?
Today was a great win in my book fellas but honestly this team makes you want to have some tums or rolaids next to the couch when watching them. It was nice to see the secondary come alive today and not see us get burned deep with evans. Even better was to see stone hands will allen get a pick but I digress.
Again great win but man why in the hell do our guys seem to miss tackles? It appears today many times either a bills wideout or lynch was able to beat our first defender in space and many times break or juke the 2nd or 3rd guy for another 5 yards or more...quite frustrating. Our run defense at the line of scrimmage was virtually non-existant at times. I know that holliday was hurt during the game and ferguson was battling his injury IIRC. We didn't get enough interior pressure on edwards IMO and their backs were getting into our second level too much. We have to shore that up in the coming weeks because our schedule is extremely favorable for us to win some games.
Secondly, great teams capitalize on turnovers and put teams away when given the chance. I thought that drive after the botched punt (why in the heck did our defenders initially STOP going after their punter?? He was going to throw the ball but realized we had ZERO guys back there and he was able to get some kind of kick off). We had 2 or 3 chances this game to really put the bills away but we let them back into the game. The blocked field goal, ricky's fumble and not getting in on the punter are a few. I don't think we really brought much of a rush on the punter but kinda of odd considering they were backed up inside the 20 IIRC.
I found myself yelling at the tv for us to put it into the endzone instead of settling for a field goal. In order to get to the next level, we are going to have to get td's and learn to put teams away. Something we haven't done for YEARS.
Listening to sirius after the game on the way to dinner, I was impressed by some of the comments sparano made about ginn and how that he expects him to be held accountable for his performances. I think sparano definitely is sending a message to guys on the team letting them know that they either have to put up or either ride the pine until they do, or get out.
Either way it was a great win today. Given our situation, I don't expect for us to win much but I do like to see our guys grow. Our o-line is looking really good and we may have to guys to actually setup for a screen now. I thought some of our blocking was good but we still have a ways to go when guys are out in space taking the proper angles. A few times today, a bills defender was allowed to basically juke out a lineman or shed their block and get to ricky/ronnie easily. Some of those plays were setup great and if we kept our blocks, the end results could have been devastating. Another great example was the busted play by williams where he reversed field and it initially looked like he would pick up a first down but a blocker didn't get his guy out of the way, allowing ricky to get tackled about 6 yards short on a GREAT effort by williams.
Looking at our schedule, again no game really sticks out as a team that can destroy us. If we can get past denver, we only have our intradivisional games that may cause us real problems. Hopefully sparano watches the film and puts the defense through some serious tackling drills this week. There is no excuse for what was happening, especially on the lynch touchdown run. Guys need to stay in their lanes and stop overpursuing and going for the knockout hits. Who was the scrub that was getting to the second level on us anyway?
Enjoy this one guys. Great win today!
On another note...How do I get rid of this old screen name?
