Sack Monster
First, I think it's flatly irresponsible for teams to plan on a higher cap. Plan B, as it is being said, was the $95 million (approximate) cap number. This has been around for months. A plan should have been in place to deal with this.
Damion McIntosh actually gave us a little stability this year at left tackle. He may not perform as well as he is paid, but if he were able to do as well this year as he did last year we could use that. Given his high cap number, this wasn't that bad of a move. Cutting him saves a ton. Jones and Howard were obvious casualties.
Now, Madison is what bothers me. Did Madison need to be cut? No. Why? There were much better cuts to be made. Consider the cap numbers of Junior Seau and Gus Frerotte. With Crowder and Thomas, we have some flexibility at the linebacker position. Seau has been on the decline. I know he's a lock for the Hall of Fame, but at $2.6 million, Seau should be pushed into retirement. He's not performing anywhere near that. Frerotte's savings would be about $4.5 million. Given his poor performance last year - and the fact that Sage did better - it would seem to make sense to keep Sage as the starter and release Frerotte. Yet, Sage is gone and Gus is still on this team. Madison's cap savings was less than both of them at $1.9 million. (I've also seen Madison's savings listed at $2.6 million, but I have no idea.)
Other guys that could easily be cut as they don't really perform to their expected level are David Bowens, Marty Booker, and Kevin Carter. Booker is adequate and Carter was successful. It's easier to replace Booker and Carter than it will be to replace Madison.
Assuming these numbers are approximately correct, it doesn't really make sense to me to cut Madison. There are other guys here who should've been gone long before that.
