First, I think it's flatly irresponsible for teams to plan on a higher cap. Plan B, as it is being said, was the $95 million (approximate) cap number. This has been around for months. A plan should have been in place to deal with this.

Damion McIntosh actually gave us a little stability this year at left tackle. He may not perform as well as he is paid, but if he were able to do as well this year as he did last year we could use that. Given his high cap number, this wasn't that bad of a move. Cutting him saves a ton. Jones and Howard were obvious casualties.

Now, Madison is what bothers me. Did Madison need to be cut? No. Why? There were much better cuts to be made. Consider the cap numbers of Junior Seau and Gus Frerotte. With Crowder and Thomas, we have some flexibility at the linebacker position. Seau has been on the decline. I know he's a lock for the Hall of Fame, but at $2.6 million, Seau should be pushed into retirement. He's not performing anywhere near that. Frerotte's savings would be about $4.5 million. Given his poor performance last year - and the fact that Sage did better - it would seem to make sense to keep Sage as the starter and release Frerotte. Yet, Sage is gone and Gus is still on this team. Madison's cap savings was less than both of them at $1.9 million. (I've also seen Madison's savings listed at $2.6 million, but I have no idea.)

Other guys that could easily be cut as they don't really perform to their expected level are David Bowens, Marty Booker, and Kevin Carter. Booker is adequate and Carter was successful. It's easier to replace Booker and Carter than it will be to replace Madison.

Assuming these numbers are approximately correct, it doesn't really make sense to me to cut Madison. There are other guys here who should've been gone long before that.

Madison should have been cut regardless of our cap situation. He was dead space, a bad attitude, and does not fit the scheme.

Thanks for the 1-star rating and the meaningless platitudes. You really add a lot to the conversation.

its not just us assuming we would have a higher cap number... its the teams not knowing that all the incentives that would have been paid next season are instead pushed onto this season... which took about an additional 10 million off our salary cap... that hurt...

but since theres no cap next year all those incentives that we have to pay this year, plus the ones for next year are combined in this years cap... and i think thats the worst part of all this...

sam should not have been cut. it makes no sense at all. How the hell do we replace him this year?

I don't know if Madison should've been cut but he wasn't playing like he should be. He played horrible last year and if Saban made the cut it's what's best for the team.

But you say in your above statement that Sage is better than Gus? I'm not quite sure how you came up with this. Sage had that amazing game v.s Buffalo but when he started we got shutout by the Browns. Frerotte kept us alive in many of those games and won us 8(Sage won us the Buffalo game). I do believe Gus should restructure but we need him incase we don't get Drew Brees or Daunte and we need a veteran to start untill our rookie is ready.

I can't believe all these cuts or possible cuts. I thought I remember reading on here we were good with cap space.

Hopefully we'll still be as good as expected next year and even more important we land Drew Brees tomorrow!

I think all he did was give his opinion. :)

Dolphins tried to get Madison to restructure and they couldnt agree...

all well... lets see what happens

I would have been MORE upset if they released Carter. He was pretty good.

Actually, I agree with him. Sam has been slipping, and has an inflated sense of his own value.

Again, someone who has never been in a profession where you need to cut people to get under the league's salary cap, I don't understand why you think you know more then a professional sports team's front office.

I'd really like to know why you believe they made the wrong decisions. I never understood that logic. They get PAID to make this franchise work. This is what they do for a living.

Enlighten me, please

Ever hear of him coming back with a smaller contract? Why do you make it seem like it's impossible for him to ever return?

The only thing I disagree with here is" he has a bad attitude". Do you mean that he was unwilling to take a pay cut? Because Sam has always been known to have a great locker room presence.

One of the most difficult situations for a Head Coach and or General Manager to do is to cut a player whom is well liked by not only his teammates but the general public as well and Sam Madison fits this mold. I too am sorry to see him go (he could be resigned at a lower cost) but emotions aside, it was something that had to be done. I have confidence in the players we do have now that they can perform well enough for us to be successful.

lets get this str8 you homers. madison is garbage. madison is a 1 mil/year nickle cb in a zone scheme. we're not going to the superbowl next year, probably not even going to the playoffs without a cba intact. therefore, madison is completely useless to us as we need to get young guys in here to find out who is gonna be a part of the dolphins long term.
