Who cares?

Approximately 2,215 miles away, in Sarasota, Fla., there is a man who deserves better. Who deserves your attention and affection.

Following the 1998 season, during which Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa launched the Home Run Chase that Really Wasn't, Griffey and Bonds -- near-lifelong acquaintances -- met up in Florida. Bonds confided in Griffey that he was about to start taking some "hard-core stuff" to keep up with the big boys.

Griffey nodded, but knew all along it wasn't for him.

At the time, the decision was mostly about the reality at hand: Griffey already ranked near the top of the profession. Why be greedy?

Yet with what we know now, that day should go down as a landmark. It was the day when Barry Bonds decided to cheat and break all the records, and Ken Griffey Jr. decided to be honest and fade. It was the day when Barry Bonds decided he was bigger than the game, and Ken Griffey Jr. decided the game was bigger than him. It was the day Barry Bonds committed himself to greed. It was the day Ken Griffey Jr. committed himself to happiness.

I feel bad for Griffey. He was one of the best all around baseball players ever when he was in Seattle. Its too bad when he went to Cincy he just couldn't stay healthy because right now we'd be talking about him being the one to break Hank Aaron's HR record this year.

Not a huge Griffey fan. Him walking out of the ESPY's really cemented that as well. Just a first class Jerk. I don't feel too sorry for him. He had opportunities to go to the AL numerous times to be a DH and he has turned down those trades. If he did that he would have been better off in the long-run.

some how it doesnt surprise me you missed the whole point. im guessing you didnt read the article..

and why the hell would Griffey cheat himself and the game by being a DH? hes still a pretty good defensive CF. If Junior was in it for the records like alot of people, he would of injected steriods like alot of people and took the records. he doesnt need to be a DH. as a Junior fan i would hope and pray he would retire before he would have to do that.

Nice fluff piece, but I don't buy it for a second. Griffey juiced as well. The fact that he went the opposite way is the only reason people aren't looking into him and his dealings as well.

Junior juiced? :roflmao:

when? when he gained all that muscle?

People have a misconception about steroids in general. Most of the guys busted so far with positive tests weren't huge bodybuilders. Steroids allow your body to recover faster, thus allowing you to workout sooner and pack muscle on. That is why it is believed so many pitchers/catchers take it, or took it. Players like Gagne, Piazza, Pudge, Clemons and others have all been rumored to be heavy users at one time or another. Griffey falls in that same category.

He may have gotten off of them sooner, but I doubt it. I think the simple fact that he has injured himself so many times raises some eyebrows, but also kept people off his trail since he wasn't around to break any records ala Bonds.

and how exactly does junior fall into this category? lmao. his recovery has been anything but fast. infact his recovery is ALWAYS longer then expected.

saying his injuries raise eyebrows is ridiculous. his defense style and playing in seattle on that concrete was huge reasons for his injuries. that and the fact that hes always known to not have the greatest work ethic ever. especially in the weight room. anyone even putting junior in the same sentence as steriods shows how much they truely know about him..0

 Ok fine, Griffey is the cleanest most bestest player ever. He would never do anything to harm the game unlike the big poopy head Bonds.

Happy? If you choose to bury your head in the sand on this issue, by all means go ahead. However the problem in baseball (and the NBA and the NFL) with steroids and HGH (the real issue at hand btw) reaches every team and just about 1/3 to 1/2 of every player on the team. Throw in amphetimines and you can just about red flag everyone in MLB.

I know Bonds cheated. Yet, he has never failed a steroids test. Same goes for Sosa, McGwire, Piazza, Clemens, Gagne, Schilling, Sheffield, Pduge, and Junior. If you are to indict those players in the public eye, Griffey has to be right there with them.

that was a good read. I was always a huge Griffey fan and it always hurt to see him fade like that because of his injuries. Anyway, I wish him the best.

Griffey use to be my favorite player when he was with seattle. He's not my favorite anymore but i still really like him, i wish he could be where bonds is at (approaching the record)

I think Griff is twice the guy that Barry is......Barry would likely have all the records now had he not gotten hurt so often....but I think it is possible that Griff goes to the Hall while Barry will be left out like a lot of other cheaters who don't deserve to ever be there.

Great article. Griffey's a good guy and I hope that these last couple of seasons he has left are healthy ones. He's gone through a lot with all the injuries he's suffered and a lesser man would have called it quits with all the accomplishments and money he's made. Not Griffey, he's a fighter and I am pulling for him big time!

Ok, do you have anything to back up your libelous claim that Griffey has taken steroids?

I think it's more likely that Griff gets left out than Bonds being left out. Nobody knows who took 'roids or who didn't so if they're going to keep some guys out who've never failed a drug test than they mine as well keep everybody out from this generation. A point was made about Amphetamines but they've long been a part of baseball and it's hard to know who took them in the past.

Griff has a better image to the public than Bonds but he wasn't a better player because he was always hurt. Even in Seattle he had a few injuries. I read something today that if you tally up Bonds walk total throughout his career he has missed combined 5 seasons worth of AB's.
