Barry Jackson: Discusses Line Before and After Martin Saga, Other Notes

In fairness to Incognito, he was giving up the sacks because he had Martin by his side as left tackle. The line started playing much better once McKinnie came on board and learned the system. It sounds as though the players like Brenner a lot and that could go a long way in the decision to bring Incognito back next year or not. McKinnie saying he really likes playing along side Brenner is huge, hopefully it pans out well for the team in the future.

i'll never understand why they tore up that $2.7 mil option for 2014 to retain mckinnies services...

Based on play I was about to ask this? I think you absolutely bring back Mckinne next year. However, based on how the line has been playing currently do you still stick with your "improvement" plans?

1) Draft or Via FA 2 Tackles and at least 1 G?

If you do that? Do you dare release these bunch that has been playing well?

the way this team drafts how good do you feel about a plug and play left tackle out of that??? i don't...next year we want to compete for the whole shebang thats the last time we want tobe breaking in a fresh off the boat left tackle...

miami could have waited til after the season and seen how mckinnie looked and then went thru the draft and free agency process with him still on the books and if they decided to go a different direction tear up that final year then...instead we do something stupid from the jump

this all says to me we are gonna dump a ton of money in some free agent left tackle this year...probably the kc guy...and i'm not sure i like his pass pro work more than i do mckinnies to begin with...i get that we want to get more athletic for the wide stretch stuff and in space etc but man $2.7 mil to have a fallback option when you want to compete for the whole ball of wax is nothing..worst case keep 4 tackles if need be on the 53 and make him the primary backup swing...if they screw this up and some dude sucks balls next year in his stead it wont surprise me

What we have here -- for the first time all year -- is a line playing passably well. Credit McKinnie a lot. And Clabo for stepping it up. Garner has been doing well, as well as Brenner surprising some people.

What that means is 1. You keep what you got that's working; while, 2. Trying hard to improve what you've got. Get some players that can beat out guys on the OL right now -- and then you'll have decent backups. And an OL trending toward the top 12 in the league.

100 percent truth.

The lines recent improved play does complicate things a bit. I have always heard that one of the main success factors with online play is continuity. At the same time, I think we would be foolish not to look to upgrade. Just because they are playing better does not mean they are a very good unit. It just means they have risen from the horrible depths they once inhabited. In regards to Mkinnie, the prospect of relying on him next year scares the crap out of me. He has a way of letting himself go in the offseason and getting into shape once the season starts. He is playing well now, but there is a reason Baltimore replaced him.

yeah they replaced him cause athletically he can't get to things in the run game anymore...but hell our pass pro was horrid before he got here...and we are a passing team...i'm just saying we better be careful here...could easily end up with suck when we had serviceable and not walked back into the qb veteran

i don't disagree that he does play himself into shape every year...

Looks like the line is better off without Richie, although Martin was such a weak link, the other OL'ers had to compensate for him so it's hard to tell. But whether or not we're better off without Incog, we're certainly better off on the field performance-wise, and off the field character-wise without the mama's boy crybaby who obviously had earned no respect from his peers, didn't hesitate to throw his teammates under the bus, was perfectly happy to go AWOL with pay and if not for his physique, would be better served designing floral arrangements.

I want to give Clabo a lot of credit for turning his season around and playing at a much higher level....great mental toughness.

McKinnie has been the defining force for this improvement giving solid protect to Tannehill backside allowing him to feel more comfortable in the pocket.

Admirable play from both guards, but especially the two guys filling in....Brenner and Garner...both have earned a shot to compete next season for starting jobs.

I have to believe removing both Incognito's brash personality and Martin's awkwardness has done wonders for the overall culture of the unit.

Considering the last 4 first round draft picks, (Odrick,Pouncey,Tannehill, Jordan) including the two offensive linemen they drafted (Pouncey and Long) I feel confident we choose to draft a linnemen with the first pick, that he would be a plug and play LT.

Addition by subtraction...The immature trouble makers are gone and things settle down with those left acting like "Pros"
Who would have guessed this is the fix they needed?
Thank you Martin...walking away was the best thing you could have done for this team. I wonder who else needs to walk in other positions before they get to the Pats level?

What I like about Jackson's article is something that needs to be discussed more....Jon Martin was a lousy football player.

Channing Chrowder was saying on his show that while Brenner was pulling great and getting to the 2nd lvl he was getting run over when he got there. I kinda took it with a grain of salt but has anyone seen the film that this is true? The highlights usually don't include guard or tackle play
