The Dolphins, who have given thought to adding a veteran receiver, plan to audition former Bengals star Chad Ochocinco next week, according to a source close to him.
The Dolphins would not confirm the workout, which was first reported by CBS.
Ochocinco, who attended Miami Beach High, was released by the Patriots last week after the worst statistical season of his career. He caught 15 passes for 276 yards and one touchdown in 15 games, was inactive for the AFC Championship and caught one pass for 21 yards in the Super Bowl.
Ochocinco, 34, has told friends he would like to sign with the Dolphins and his camp is optimistic that there’s genuine interest. The Dolphins have signed some of the players they worked out this offseason but passed on several others.

Nuthin wrong with that.

Yes try him out. If WR is our weakest link, we not leave any stone unturned..

He was awful last year...

I'd rather go with the young guys instead of him...

If he can still bring it, I'd like to get Chad signed. Dude is a true play maker- that's what we need. Not sure what happened with the Patriots.

They would not bring him in, if there was not some concern regarding the WR's. While I think the group we have can get it done, I think you have to look at him just to make sure you don't leave an acorn on the ground that could grow into a tree.

I guess I just don't get it

I have seen several comments that suggest that we don't lose anything by trying out Ochocinco. I disagree. Even if he is not a huge diva and he contributes what we expect - will he make the team that much better next year?

We have a lot of younger receivers that we need to find out if they will make it or not. Having Ochocinco will slow down that process. It is not like Ochocinco has a history of mentoring younger receivers so we don't get the benefit out of having him other than whatever increase in productivity he brings.

Unless we have given up on a lot of the younger WRs and plan to dump them and use CO as a stop-gap then I really hope we don't go down that road. The best we can hope for is some increase in productivity at the expense of learning about and developing the young group we have.

The worst that could happen is that he will tank and we will lose opportunity to learn about and develop the WRs we have.

I just don't see the upside as worth the risk - especially after his performance last year.

Ochocinco, a second-round pick in 2001 out of Oregon State, has been selected to the Pro Bowl six games and named an All-Pro three teams.

Jesus, hasn't anyone ever heard of an editor over there?

The more i look at the wr roster of Hartline, Bess, Gates, Nandee, Wallace, and Moore the more i say why the hell not! Despite what many on here believe a system is not going to make talent ! Brian Hartline is not the next Jordie.Nelson, jesus Nelson had double the tds last year that Hartline had in his career and almost double the yards.

We have all of the leverage here right now. No reason not to kick the tires, plus our DC knows him from cincy. Hell have good insight on ocho, ..if a couple of teams get into it though, I say screw it

Which player is he going to stunt the growth of? The Dolphins are likely going to carry six wide receivers this upcoming season. I would say Hartline, Bess, Naanee and Gates(even though some think he is on the bubble) are just about locks to make the roster. That means there are two spots up for grabs. Pruitt has a good chance to make it because of his play on special teams, but the rest have a lot to prove. Cunningham, Matthews, Fuller and Moye are likely destined for the practice squad anyways so I doubt Ochocinco would stunt their growths.

Wallace and Moore are entering their third season and my feeling is if they can't outperform a 34 year old Ochocinco in training camp they probably are never going to make a major impact with the team.

I don't see how having Ochocinco as one of the 12 or 13 wide receivers in camp is going to stunt the growth of younger players. Now, if it comes down to the final roster spot and it is a toss up between Ochocinco and someone like Matthews you definitely go with Matthews. I just can't see how having Ochocinco in training camp is going to hurt the team.

One of the reasons why the Pats waited this long to cut him was because they loved him as a teammate. He did what was asked of him and never complained. While he had a huge personality in Cincy, they didnt get rid of him because he was never malicious, he was a decent guy who loved to mess with people. He might be to "celebrity" for us while we are rebuilding but if we did sign him i wouldnt worry about him tearing apart the lockerroom.

Wideouts usually take years to develop. Very rarely do they contribute immediately, even in todays NFL. Anyone expecting big things from our very late round picks are going to be in for a nasty surprise this season. We've seen what Hartline and Bess can bring to the table and Legedu Naanee has floated around the league for years. Nothing about our wideout group screams "we must let these guys compete!". I seriously doubt that bringing in a veteran receiver will hamper the growth of any of these players.

Last season the Pats horrifically missed when "scouting" Ochocinco. They wanted him to do things that were against his grain and instantly know one of the more complex passing schemes in the NFL. It just wasnt a good fit anywhere. And with Tom Brady, you either get on the same page with him or he will throw it elsewhere(one of the reasons why they brought back Branch and extended Gron).
Im not convinced he would fit in with what we are trying to do with our offense, but if he can inject a year or two of production while our young guys learn(or we draft someone high next year), then whats the downside? Its not like he will make our offense worse and we dont need him for multiple years to come. Best case: hes someone we plug in to get some decent production for a year. Worst case: he doesnt make the team. We can survive that.

IMO the short answer to your question is that it will take first team snaps away from a receiver and it will trickle down from there. We need to find out which of these people will work out and we also need our receivers to develop timing with our QBs.
